Everything you need to know about enrolling in courses

Find out how to complete your UNSW course enrolment step by step, how to troubleshoot problems and who to contact for help.

Ready to choose your courses?

Once you know which courses to enrol in for the upcoming teaching period, head to myUNSW to complete the first step of enrolment.

  • Course enrolment is step one of the two-step enrolment process at UNSW. It is when you will select the courses (subjects) that you will be taking at UNSW for the following year, allowing you to reserve your spot in courses for multiple teaching periods.

Looking for step two of the process, class registration? Find it here

  • If you are starting a new program, you can enrol in courses once you have accepted Part II of your offer. (Get help with managing your offer.)

If you are continuing a program, we will send details of your annual Course Enrolment Appointment to your UNSW student email. Your 'appointment' is the specific day and time you can start enrolling in your courses for the following year.

  • The entire enrolment process (from accepting your offer as a new student, through to course enrolment and class registration) is outlined in the video below.

Further step-by-step guides are below. Separate guides are available for UNSW Canberra, Research and Postgrad Online students.

We strongly recommend that you decide what courses you want to enrol in before proceeding, and following the steps for Option 1 below.

Tips for deciding what courses to take:

    • Use the UNSW Handbook to search for courses and detailed course information.
    • Refer to the progression plan (also called a sample program or degree template) for your program.
    • Use the Class Search in myUNSW to search for courses.
    • If you are a new student, check your personalised offer page for course selection advice for the first term. A link to this should be in your email, but if you can't find it, contact The Nucleus: Student Hub

Option 1: If you know the names and/or codes for the courses you want to enrol in

    a) Enter a course code or name into the search field and click 'Search'. You can enter multiple courses separated by a comma:

    Troubleshooting

If you receive an error when trying to enrol in courses, check that you are not trying to enrol in:

    • too many courses - the maximum units of credit (UOC) per term is 18, or 12 in Summer Term
    • an incorrect term order - you must enrol in at least one course in Term 1 before enrolling in Term 2 and at least one course in Term 2 before enrolling in Term 3
    • a course that has a co-requisite course (indicated on the UNSW Handbook) that you are not also enrolling in, and that you haven't already completed
    • a course that has a pre-requisite course (indicated on the UNSW Handbook) that you have not successfully completed, or that you are not enrolled in for a prior term
    • View our full list of common enrolment errors
  • 2. Select the courses that you want to swap

    a) Click 'Swap' alongside the course that you would like to swap:

    b) If you know the code or name of the course that you want to enrol in, enter it into the search field. If not, adjust the filters to match your course preferences. Then click 'Search':

    c) Select the course that you want to swap into and click 'Select Courses':

    3. Confirm your course enrolment

    a) The Course Enrolment page will now display both the course you are enrolled in and the course you want to swap into. There will be a single box beside them under the heading Select?. Tick the box and click 'Confirm Enrolment Request':

    b) On the Confirm Enrolment Request page, click 'Submit Enrolment Request':

You should then get a Success message.

Note: You will not lose your spot in your enrolled course until you complete all the above steps.

  • There are several deadlines you need to be aware of when considering dropping a course. You can drop a course without financial and academic penalty up until the census date.

    • International students: It is a condition of your student visa that you be enrolled in 48 units of credit (UOC) in a year and at least 12 UOC in a term. If there are reasons why you cannot study 48 UOC in a year or 12 UOC a term, you will need to apply to reduce your study load.
    • Want to drop the last/only course that you're enrolled in for a term? You cannot drop your last course in a term. If you want to drop all of your courses and you intend to return to study later, you need to apply for Program Leave before the census date. If you do not intend to return to study, you need to apply for Program Discontinuation

    2. Select the course that you want to drop

    a) Click 'Drop' alongside the course that you would like to drop:

    3. Confirm your course enrolment

    a) On the Confirm Enrolment Request page, click 'Submit Enrolment Request':

    c) Check that you get a Success message:
