I congratulate you on all that you've achieved in those 40 years, on the reputation you've built, the relationships you've fostered and the positive social impact that drives your work. Long may you continue to advance social justice in our community.
Professor Ian Jacobs, President and Vice-Chancellor, UNSW Sydney (20152022)
Happy 40th birthday to the Social Policy Research Centre here at UNSW. Forty years of leading research agendas on poverty, inequality, wellbeing and justice... research that shapes public debates and influences policy in our communities both nationally and internationally. Forty years of research that's also striving to improve the lives of individuals and communities, especially those experiencing disadvantage or marginalisation.
Professor Claire Annesley, Dean, UNSW Arts Architecture & Design

Historical reflections from our past directors

"Over the years the SPRC has focused on how people live and has had a great deal of success in framing issues, researching problems, developing data and proposing solutions... You have had 40 years of tremendous achievement. I hope that the next 40 are just as productive."

Professor Adam Graycar, Director 1980–1985

"SPRC exists to make a difference to the world by producing robust evidence and deep theoretical insights into social policies which enable policymakers and advocates to use our research to make the world a more equitable place for vulnerable and oppressed populations."

Professor Ilan Katz, Director 2007–2011

"The wisdom and knowledge gained by the SPRC over its 40 years positions it to continue to make a valuable and important contribution not only to social policy and practice in Australia but also internationally... The past and present at SPRC are to be celebrated."

Professor Kelley Johnson, Director 2014–2016

"It is difficult to imagine an Australia without the SPRC. Over the 40 years since its establishment, the centre has contributed to a huge range of policy-relevant social research... Few research centres have played such a central role in promoting the discipline of which they are part..."

Professor Peter Saunders, Director 1985–2007

"Our canvas needs to be both macro and micro, to address the technical questions of distribution and the social questions of practices and values. In its time, SPRC has been consistently unhesitating in taking on these tasks and occupying these spaces."

Associate Professor kylie valentine, Acting Director 2011–2014

"Over its 40 years, SPRC has established itself as a trusted public voice, a go-to source of authoritative information, recognised for taking a fundamentally ethical and humanitarian approach to tackling pressing issues of social justice and inequality of all kinds."

Professor Lyn Craig, Director 2016–2017

In preparing for these anniversaries I've been so touched by the many many warm and generous messages from our partners and colleagues and these messages have spoken to the quality and impact of our research but most importantly to our trustworthiness and honesty in dealings with community.
Professor Carla Treloar, Director, Social Policy Research Centre & Centre for Social Research in Health

The reader cannot fail to admire his energy and achievements ...  He manages to tell his story from childhood to retirement with humour, modesty, generosity to colleagues and friends” (Emeritus Professor Jonathan Bradshaw, CBE FBA, University of York)

“Engaging, lively, funny and informative ... Peter keeps us entertained with his insights into the complexities of intertwining career and family, and occasional amusing anecdotes about the eccentricities of colleagues along the way” (Professor Janeen Baxter, Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Children and Families over the Life Course, University of Queensland)

“A compelling story about the joys of academic life from one of today's internationally best known Australian social policy researchers ... A beautiful and inspiring story” (Professor Bea Cantillon, Director of the Herman Deleeck Centre for Social Policy, University of Antwerp)
