Inclusive Education Showcase

Inclusive Education Showcase

Inclusive Education comprises practices that make teaching and learning more accessible to all students. It is framed by the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to increase the accessibility of tertiary education to a wider population of students.

UNSW educators who teach inclusively will present their work at this showcase, followed by a Q&A. The showcase is a unique opportunity for the UNSW teaching community to learn about different inclusive technologies and practices and how to incorporate them into their teaching and learning to make them more accessible.

Presenters

Nicole Saintalin is a qualitative researcher currently working in online education and student experience at UNSW. Through her work in creating and evaluating online resources, she has developed a keen interest in accessibility. Nicole will give you 10 quick tips on how to create an accessible online assessment.

Professor Peter Heslin is a Professor of Management, Registered Psychologist, and Fellow of the Scientia Education Academy. Peter will describe how you can build supportive learning communities via having students give, receive, and process appreciative feedback, before reflecting upon their most viable opportunities to increase their positive impact on their peers.

Dr Deborah Barros Leal Farias is Senior Lecturer at the School of Social Sciences, where she teaches Politics and International Relations.  Deborah will talk about the importance of sharing with students her own lived experience with depression and anxiety.

Dr Sue O’Neill is a Senior Lecturer in the UNSW School of Education. Sue will demonstrate how live presentation software (Zeetings) can be used synchronously with Microsoft Teams to engage learners online and generate closed captioning to improve accessibility for students with auditory disability.

Dr Alanya Drummond is a Lecturer in the Built Environment and the UNSW Disability Champion. Alanya will talk about her implementation of an R U OK? monitor in the courses she convenes for Interior Architecture, to track how her students are coping throughout term. Alanya will talk about how she set up this system quickly and easily using some Moodle hacks, how she communicates the initiative to students, and what she does with the responses. This session will highlight the ways that we can show students we care about their mental health by adopting some small, incremental changes in our digital and physical classrooms

Reinhardt Sosin manages Audio Visual Services and Technologies at UNSW. His team has been prototyping and developing a variable height, wheelchair friendly, ambidextrous lectern. This design can serve as the next generation presenter table in teaching spaces and provide a far superior experience for more members of our community.

Dr Geraldine Townend is a lecturer in the UNSW School of Education. She will share some teaching strategies to support highly able learners with disability and, using a case study example, show how she incorporates a few small changes to support Universal Design for Learning principles of engagement, representation, action and expression.  In the education courses which she teaches at UNSW, Geraldine provides extensive information to ensure that graduate teachers are able to address the needs of primary and secondary students with non-apparent disability who are also intellectually highly able.
