Assistive technology centre

Once you have registered with Disability Support Services you can access the assistive technology rooms at:

• Main Library (Level 2, Room 207)
• Law Library (Level 1, Room 113)

All equipment in the room is managed and serviced by Disability Support Services and includes:

• computers, printer and scanner with large print display monitors and accessories
• telephone for internal calls
• ergonomic desks and chairs
• work bench
• lockers

There are hundreds of students at UNSW with a variety of disabilities. You won’t be the first and you won’t be alone. Here’s some help with navigating the campus.

Accessible and ambulant toilets

Wheelchair accessible toilets are available at each Library.

An ambulant toilet is available in most women’s and men’s toilets in the Library.

Main Library

Accessible unisex – Levels 2, 3, 4.
Ambulant women – Levels 2, 3, 4, 6, 8.
Ambulant men – Levels 2, 3, 5, 7, 8, 9.

Law Library

Accessible unisex – Ground Level.

Paddington Library

Accessible unisex – Block A – Basement Level, next to Library entrance.

Parking on campus

If you require disabled parking, you will need to apply for a parking permit with the NSW Government. UNSW is not responsible for authorised disabled parking stickers.

You may be heavily fined if you park in designated disabled parking bays and you do not have a proper permit.

There are parking stations on campus, but you will have to pay to use them. Please note that free parking in the streets surrounding the university is very limited.

Accessibility Ambassadors 

UNSW Student Accessibility Ambassadors volunteer to help keep our Kensington and Paddington campuses inclusive and assist our community to fully participate in campus events.

Accessibility Ambassadors assist:

• People with a disability (permanent or temporary) 
• People managing challenges such as a walking difficulty or vision impairment 
• People with anxiety or other conditions who may need companionship 
• Elderly people 
• A condition that results in disturbed behaviour due to the environment 
• Staff or student program organisers who are running an event for UNSW 

They are trained to assist all visitors at UNSW events by providing information on accessibility on campus, and physical navigation and tours of the campus.

Welfare and Disabilities Space

Navigating a university campus can be intense so if you are in need of a snack or quiet space to hang out and relax visit the Disability and Welfare Room. It’s a space for any student living with a disability or welfare concerns to chill. There’s a couch, kitchenette and food to help you out while you’re at uni.

It's located in the Arc Precinct, Baxter College, off Basser Steps, Monday to Friday 8.30am - 6pm. Visit or email for info and access and join the Students with Disabilities Facebook group.

Students with Disabilities Collective

The Students with Disabilities Collective appreciates that uni can be a challenge for any student but is potentially even more so for students with living with disabilities.

The Students with Disabilities Officer represents all students living with a visible and non-visible disability on the Student Representative Council. Read more about the types of disability via the Australian Network on Disability.

Our aim is to make university a more positive experience for these students, without disadvantage or discrimination and to maximise the support available.

We do this by listening to any issues, concerns, or complaints that you may have, and making sure University policies meet requirements. As well as this, we advocate for students living with a disability and provide discrimination support, promote disability-friendly events such as film nights, awareness days, campaigns and more.

It's our mission to provide all the support we can to make sure students with disabilities are given every chance of reaching our full potential and enjoying their time at university.

Accessing the NDIS 

A National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) access plan may help you attend university while managing your disability.

If you are living with disability and want to register for the NDIS, you can check your eligibility against the access requirements. These take into account age, residency status, disability and in some cases your early intervention requirements.
