Overview

All active UNSW staff, students and alumni have access to the eduroam and Uniwide Wi-Fi networks at UNSW.  Uniwide will be retired in the near future. These networks offer fast, secure wireless network connectivity from a wide range of locations across UNSW’s campuses.

For University staff and students located at affiliate institutions, the recommended Wi-Fi network is the eduroam-UNSW. To connect to the network please refer to the self-help guide provided below.

Where two eduroam Wi-Fi services are in close proximity, UNSW’s Wi-Fi will be eduroam-UNSW.

Eduroam

The eduroam network will become the primary UNSW network for staff, students and guests.

Once enrolled at UNSW, staff and students can use the eduroam service not only on the university's campuses across Australia and overseas but also when working from affiliate locations.

Network Name: eduroam (eduroam-UNSW for affiliates)
Username: z1234567@ad.unsw.edu.au
Password: zID Password

Uniwide

UNSW staff and students can still use Uniwide for campus Wi-Fi access (until it is retired), but it’s important to note that eduroam is th e main Wi-Fi network provided by UNSW.

Uniwide uses your zID and password to authenticate. For a detailed guide on how to configure your device please refer to the self-help guides provided below.

Network Name: uniwide

Guest Wi-Fi

Visitors who do not have eduroam credentials from their home institution can access Wi-Fi at UNSW by connecting to the UNSW Guest Network or the UNSW-getonline network.

You can find detailed instructions on how to connect on the Guest Wi-Fi page or the self-help guides below.

Troubleshooting guides

  • If you are having trouble connecting to the wireless, one thing to try is to forget the wireless network and try again.

To forget the network on an Apple device, please refer to this link:-

    https://support.apple.com/en-au/HT208941

To forget the network on a Microsoft Windows device please refer to this link:-

  • Step 1 - Please enter your current zID Password

Step 2 - You will see this prompt after changing your UNSW password. If this prompt continually re-appears it may indicate that your IT account is locked. Please contact the IT Service Centre to have your account unlocked.

  • UNSW has a requirement to periodically update the certificate used to secure the Wi-Fi network. If your device has an outdated certificate you may receive a notification to update it

UNSW has authored their trusted root certificate.  To ensure you are connecting to the correct service please ensure that the certificate is similar to the below certificates when connecting.

Alternatively you can install the certificate:

    How to install the certificate:

    Step 1 - Please download UNSW_Root.crt

Step 2 - If your device does not automatically open the downloaded certificate file, you may need to manually tap the file name you download "UNSW_Root.crt" to install the certificate. You may be asked for your device's password/PIN/biometric authentication (e.g. fingerprint) to authorise the installation process.

Step 3 - Optionally give a name for the "Certificate name:". You can give it any name ( e.g.: "unsw wifi" ) which will only be for you to identify it when you need to select it from the user certificate drop-down menu.

Step 4 -Connect to uniwide or eduroam as per the above settings. When you get to the Select Certificate dropdown, you should now also see the new "unsw wifi" certificate that you've previously installed and be able select it.

Alternatively you can elect to trust the presented certificate.

Step 1 - Navigate to the Wi-Fi Settings and Forget the 'network name' Network.

Step 2 - Go back to the Wi-Fi Settings and Connect to the 'network name' Network, make sure you select the Accept Certificate.

  • Information on how to connect to the Wi-Fi can be found in the Self Help guides. If you continue to need assistance, raise a help desk ticket or go to a Campus IT Hub.
