Life after Navy

Doug recently medically retired from the Royal Australian Navy at the rank of Captain, after diagnosis, and treatment of a very rare cancer (Lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma and AL Amyloidosis), Doug is not in remission and faces future medical challenges.  However, Doug continues his passion in international engagement, security and strategic matters. He remains engaged with the veteran community, offering his time to mentor future leaders, while also committing to dedicate his efforts in rare cancer lived experience advocacy, supporting others on their journeys.

Proving that an incurable rare cancer is no reason to give up or give in, Doug has benefited from remaining engaged in sport for his rehabilitation and ongoing physical and mental wellbeing. In 2024 he completed a 40 year goal to compete in the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona, Hawaii, raising funds for Invictus Australia through his efforts and proving that cancer will not define him.

Continuing his close links to the Australian Defence Force, Doug has embraced the opportunities provided through Adaptive Sports to deal with overcoming issues arising from both his service and illness, and alongside a team of serving members and veterans, Doug represented Australia as part of the Australian Defence Force/ Invictus Australia team and competed at the 2024 United States Department of Defence Warrior Games in Orlando, Florida. He has been selected as co-captain for Team Australia at the Invictus Games in Vancouver, Canada in 2025.

While return to full time employment is considered unlikely, Doug intends to continue learning, studying, coaching, volunteering, mentoring and providing advocacy across areas that he remains passionate about while training, competing and setting himself challenges to help maintain his own mental and physical health while hopefully inspiring and motivating others to work through their own challenges.
