  • Topic: Backstage and Frontstage: Unpublished and Published Accounts of Stanley Milgram’s Obedience Experiments and their Implications for “Obedience to Authority”

Abstract

The availability of Stanley Milgram’s archival material has attracted renewed scholarly attention to the most famous experiments in psychology. Recent scholarship drawing on archival material has shed new light on the ethical, methodological and theoretical interpretations of Milgram’s research with some calling for a major revision of the way the obedience experiments are portrayed in scholarly, textbook and public accounts (Burger, Girgis & Manning, 2011; Griggs, 2015). In this seminar I will present some findings from interviews with former subjects and research staff and my own research in the archives to enrich our understanding of the research and challenge some of the myths that have grown up around it.
