Evacuation strategies are a critical component of all fire safety systems! Together, we will explore the use of advanced simulation and diagnostics tools, in our search for the most effective solutions to guide individuals to the nearest and safest exits during fire emergencies.

VIP ChallENG research goals

Our vision is a future where no one will ever have to experience the life-changing impacts of fire injuries and deaths!

Our VIP program aims to implement science-based principles to develop practical solutions, protecting Australian communities and assets from fires. In collaboration with our industry and university partners, we are using state-of-the-art numerical and experimental diagnostics capabilities to deliver fire protection, prevention, intervention and mitigation solutions.

We will train you and your team to:

  • Build a fire evacuation model to simulate evacuees’ responses during fire emergencies.
  • Perform a full-scale modelling to simulate the development of building fires.
  • Operate and perform high-speed cameras, to capture vision-based information that is critical for the understanding of the evacuation crowd behaviours.

Through this project:

  • You will be part of a highly successful UNSW combustion diagnostics and fire research.
  • You will develop programming (e.g., Matlab, Fire Dynamic Simulators, etc.) and imaging skills that are highly sought after by the fire industry and research communities.
  • You will contribute to the body of knowledge that is drawn on by the fire communities to save lives.
