Purpose of the consultations

The diverse perspectives and contributions of our academic and professional staff are invaluable in shaping the future of societal impact at UNSW. Commencing in February 2024 we will run staff consultation workshops with all faculties and divisions in Sydney and Canberra. These consultations will begin the university-wide engagement process to genuinely understand how UNSW can create a better world and the strategic priorities needed to enable this.

A comprehensive Discussion Paper is now available. The purpose of this paper is to create a shared understanding of what UNSW’s Societal Impact Framework is aiming to achieve and the importance of the consultations as a key source of insights. Early views and research presented in this paper will undergo changes as we listen, learn and reconsider during the consultations. If you are unable to attend the workshops, an online consultation survey will be made available closer to the date. For regional staff, there will be an online workshop (date and time to be announced soon).

*dates and times are indicative and subject to change. Participants will be notified of their workshop date in early January 2024.

Why your input is important

Everyone at UNSW contributes to UNSW’s societal impact. As a publicly funded university, we're all proud agents of positive change, and while we already make significant contributions, now is the time to imagine how we can do more.

The insights gathered will be used to develop UNSW’s Societal Impact Framework (SIF). The SIF will clarify where UNSW can have an outsized impact by identifying target impact areas and how we can strengthen the capabilities that will magnify our meaningful contribution.

These consultations will provide:

  1.  A genuine opportunity to influence strategic priorities, thinking and approach.
  2. An opportunity to reflect on our unique contributions, strengths and values.
  3. A means of understanding the diversity of UNSW’s impact, and not just that captured in traditional measurement and reporting methods.
  4. An elevated voice for First Nations staff, students and external community through dedicated sessions.
  5. An assurance that UNSW values the diversity of our societal impact, and the impact focus areas will not be pursued at the exclusion of other forms of societal impact.

It’s important that every staff member has the opportunity to contribute their unique perspectives and ideas, because the collective expertise of the UNSW community is essential for identifying how we create greater impact.
