    Title:

Long-range dependence of traffic flow and speed of a Motorway: dynamics and correlation with historical Incidents.

Abstract: Speed and flow of vehicles tend to have several effects on the dynamics of a transport system. Fluctuations of these variables can implicate congestion, lower predictability and may even catalyze crashes. This paper utilizes a concept of fractal theory called the Hurst exponent, a measure of the long-range dependence (LRD) of a time-series to understand the fluctuations in flow and speed of a motorway in Sydney, Australia. The spatial and temporal variation of LRD for flow (Hflow) and speed (Hspeed) at several monitor sites were discussed. Furthermore, the effects of number of lanes on flow and speed predictability were also explored. It was observed that the flow predictability of 2-lane sections is significantly lower when compared with 3-lane and 4-lane sections. Conversely, the speed predictability of 4-lane sections is significantly higher than 2-lane and 3-lane sections. Finally, traffic congestion was defined in terms of LRD of speed and its correlation to historical incident rates was measured. It was ascertained that monitor sites with a historically high proportion of large Hspeed, were correlated with unsafe locations. It is anticipated this study would lead to many applications of fractal analysis on highways and urban traffic.

Title: Real-Time Field Service Engineer Scheduling Problem with Emergencies and Collaborations – a Simulation–Optimization Approach.

Abstract:   We address the real-time Field Service Engineer (FSE) routing and scheduling problem encountered in human resources operations. For many companies the assignment of FSEs to jobs is challenging due to the dynamic occurrence of job requests. This adds up to contractual conditions generally imposing hard service time windows (TW) and high service standards, e.g. maximum response time to an emergency. The problem also includes further constraints defining: (i) collaborations between the FSEs (if needed), and (ii) different levels of jobs’ emergency (the higher the job emergency, the faster reaction is required). An additional factor, usually neglected, which needs to be considered is the comfort of the FSEs regarding the route stability. To account for this aspect we propose a novel methodological approach that aims at mitigating the disruption propagation in addition to the minimization of the operational cost - i.e. if a FSE is not assigned to an emergency, his planning should not change, or suffer minimal deviations if close to the emergency location. To solve the problem, we designed an event-driven simulation-based optimization approach using Large Neighborhood Search. This research is a result of a commercial engagement with industry and provides results for the real-life inspired scenarios.

Title: Estimating The Subjective Risks In Car Following

Abstract:  Decision-making theory enables us to consider the car-following behaviour from a behavioural perspective. The aim of this study is to propose a behavioural car-following model incorporating risk attitude and risk perception based on the subjective expected utility (SEU) theory. Risk perception is related to the subjective probability of getting involved in a rear-end collision that is dependent on the space headway perceived by drivers. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed car-following model, the steady-state condition is also considered. In the proposed car-following model, the coefficients of risk attitude, standard deviation of the perceived space headway and vehicle weight are estimated using the Next-Generation Simulation (NGSIM) vehicle trajectory data. The steady-state model is estimated using the Next-Generation Simulation (NGSIM) loop detector data. It is notable that the estimates of the proposed car-following model are consistent with the estimation  results of the steady-state model. This study analyses the car-following behaviour in four situations: 1) a car follows a car, 2) a car follows a truck, 3) a truck follows a car and 4) a truck follows a truck. An important finding of this study is that drivers are risk averse in these four car-following conditions. This is consistent with the finding from laboratory experiments by Vinayak et al. (1). Furthermore, truck drivers while following a car have the relatively high standard deviation of the perceived space headway, which implies that truck drivers are more prone to make the erroneous perception of space headway when following a car.

Title: Constructing A Database For Computable General Equilibrium Modelling Of The Sydney Transport Network

Abstract:  In the search for benefits to justify transport projects, economic appraisals have increasingly incorporated the valuation of impacts to the wider economy. Computable general equilibrium (CGE) models provide a framework to estimate these impacts by simulating the interactions of urban economies and transport networks. In CGE models, households and firms are represented with microeconomic behavioural functions and markets adjust according to  prices. As markets both within and outside the transport network are taken into account, a  wide variety of measures which can assist in economic appraisals can be extracted. However, urban CGE models are computationally burdensome and require detailed, spatially  disaggregate data. This paper discusses the methodology used to develop a database, including an input–output table, for the calibration of an urban CGE model for Sydney, Australia. Official and publicly available data sources were manipulated using a number of mathematical and statistical techniques to compile the table for 249 regions and 20 sectors across Sydney. Issues that other input–output table developers may encounter when constructing multiregional tables were addressed in the study, such as determining the appropriate level of disaggregation, generating incomplete data and managing conflicting data. The table entries themselves were mapped and explored as they provide an interesting study of the spatial economy of Sydney. Future work will focus on streamlining the construction of input–output tables and incorporating new data sources.

Title: Influence Of Number Of Stop-&-Gos On The Route Choice Behavior 1 Of Car Drivers In Urban Road Networks

Abstract: Stop-&-go (S&G) waves are prevalent in congested traffic conditions and are characterized by cyclic patterns of forced deceleration followed by acceleration. These cause increased fuel emissions, safety risks and also impact driver’s physiology. Due to its frequent and annoying nature, drivers tend to avoid traveling on routes with more occurrences of S&G waves. Past studies have shown that route choice is often influenced by the amount of time spent in S&G traffic. However, this attribute is not a good proxy to discomfort when compared to the number of S&Gs experienced. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis: an increase in the number of stop-&-gos on a route increases its disutility. A stated choice experiment was conducted to study the route choice behavior of respondents who drove regularly to university campus by car. A status quo random parameter logit (SQ-RPL) model was used for analysis to account for the preference heterogeneity among individuals and the correlation across multiple choice tasks due to the presence of a status quo alternative. Results indicated an increased disutility on routes with larger number of S&Gs, which validated the hypothesis proposed in this study. The study also found that drivers, on average, were willing to travel for additional 16 seconds to reduce the occurrence of S&G by one on their traveled route. This study mainly contributes towards developing models that can inform current traffic assignment models to account for an impact of the number of S&Gs on route choice.

Title: Consistency Between Convergence Of Dynamic Assignment And Stochasticity Of Microsimulation: Implication On The Number Of Runs.

Abstract: Dynamic transportation models route vehicles using the principles of dynamic user equilibrium (DUE). These models include a dynamic network loading (DNL) module which is used to evaluate link costs. However, an element of stochasticity creeps into the modelling framework when the analytical dynamic assignment (DA) procedure is used along with a stochastic microscopic DNL. A methodologically correct way of solving this problem is through solving the entire DA with a microscopic DNL (DA-MicroDNL) model until convergence for a given random seed, and then repeating the process with different seed values. This study proposes an approach to determine the minimum number of replications of the DA-MicroDNL model to determine a statistically valid estimate of the measure of effectiveness (MoE). The approach was tested on a small and medium sized network having different demand and network characteristics. Results show that running the integrated DA-MicroDNL framework for a minimum number of replications provides a statistically significant MoE at much lower computation time. The consistent estimates obtained using this approach would provide robust information to transportation planners and practitioners in evaluating the impacts of several policy decisions on network performance.

Title: Does en-route information improve road network performance? An experimental study of the online information paradox

Abstract: This study investigates the empirical presence of a theoretical transportation paradox, defined as the “Online Information Paradox” (OIP). The paradox suggests that the provision of online information deteriorates trip conditions for the entire network relative to the scenario where information is not provided to users. The analytical presence of the paradox was derived for the specific network structure by using two equilibrium models, the first being the Expected User Equilibrium (EUE) solution (no information) and the other being the User Equilibrium with Recourse (UER) solution (with information). A laboratory economic experiment is used to involve an incentivized computerized route choice game that investigates the physical presence of the paradox.

Aggregate statistics of path flows and Total System Travel Cost (TSTC) were used to compare the experimental results with the theoretical findings. A total of 12 groups of 12 participants completed the experiment and the OIP was observed in 11 of the 12 cases, its occurrence being highly significant. Though information increased travel costs for users on average, it reduced the volatility of Travel costs experienced in the no information scenario indicating that information can achieve a more reliable system. Further replications of such experiments and more importantly field based identification of the phenomena will force transport professionals to not only be aware of the emergence of the paradox but also emphasize the need for the adoption of adaptive traffic assignment techniques such as UER to appropriately model the acquisition of information on a road network.

Title: Aggregated Transportation Network Design Problem Considering Electric Vehicle Recharge Facility Allocation.

    Abstract:

This study addresses the transportation network design problem (NDP) wherein the distance limit and en-route recharge of electric vehicles are taken into account. Specifically, in this work, the network design problem aims to select the optimal planning policy from a set of infrastructure design scenarios considering both road expansions and charging station allocations under a specified construction budget. The user-equilibrium mixed-vehicular traffic assignment problem with en-route recharge (MVTAP-ER) is formulated into a novel convex optimization model and extended to a newly developed bi-level program of the aggregated NDP integrating recharge facility allocation (NDP-RFA). In the algorithmic framework, a convex optimization technique and a tailored GA are adopted for, respectively, solving the subproblem – MVTAP-ER and the primal problem – NDP-RFA. Systematic experiments are conducted to test the efficacy of the proposed approaches. The results highlight the impacts of distance limits and budget levels on the project selection and evaluation. The results also report that the two design objectives, to respectively minimize the total system travel time and vehicle miles travelled, are conflicting for certain scenarios.

Title: Integrating Uncertainty Considerations into the 1 Sustainable Transportation Network Design

Abstract: Few previous works integrated both uncertainty and environment disruption into the traffic network design problem (NDP), despite the critical impact of these two factors in sustainable transportation planning. This study aims to address this gap. First, the mathematical framework of the strategic user equilibrium (StrUE) traffic assignment under volatility of both total travel demand and link capacity is analyzed, which reflects disequilibrium observed in traffic networks. Second, we incorporate the StrUE traffic assignment model into a network design project and propose a multiobjective bi-level program for the sustainable NDP. Two objective functions are formulated, which are respectively to minimize the expected total system travel time and minimize the expected total system off-gas emissions in the uncertainty-based NDP. Third, in the algorithmic framework, we develop two tailored solution methods – one is an exact algorithm and the other one is a metaheuristic method based on a genetic algorithm. Finally, systematic evaluation of the performance of the proposed approach is conducted on three different test networks. The results highlight that ignoring uncertainty considerations can result in sub-optimal design solutions in terms of expected network performance in long-term transportation planning decisions. The results also report that the two objectives, to minimize system-level travel time and vehicle emission, are conflicting for certain uncertainty-based design scenarios.

Title: Network-Wide Evaluation Of Ramp Metering Solutions: Sydney Case Study

Abstract: Ramp metering is a traffic management technique aimed at controlling the flow of traffic entering motorways and freeways, thus minimising congestion on the main thoroughfare. This technique has been studied and implemented globally since the 1960s attracting debate over the deficiencies and merits of the system. To date, there has not been a consensus on an evaluation methodology concerning the implementation of ramp metering.

This paper attempts to extend previous methodologies for evaluating ramp metering algorithms. The study conducted a comprehensive review of past applications, feasibility studies and research studies of ramp metering solutions to understand the key aspects of methodologies applied to date. Two main patterns were found in the literature, firstly, evaluations of the systems are typically conducted using before-after studies or simulation based studies. Secondly, evaluations have primarily focussed on the costs and benefits related to the performance of the motorway without consideration of system wide impacts.

This research proposes a novel evaluation methodology facilitating the evaluation of the impacts of ramp metering system on the entire network. The evaluation methodology has then been applied to a case study in Sydney, Australia using microsimulation to compare two state-of-the-art ramp metering algorithms. Results and outcomes of the application are presented with the aim of understanding the key performance metrics and factors which affect the successful implementation of these ramp metering solutions in a network wide context. In addition to the performance measures, other factors which affect the successful implementation of ramp meters are explored through direct interviews with the road authorities that have implemented ramp metering within Australia and New Zealand.

Title: Spatial Aggregation Method For Anonymous Surveys: A Case Study  For The Associations Between The Urban Environment And Obesity

Abstract: Obesity and other chronic diseases are becoming more prevalent in affluent countries such as Australia, and as such researchers are trying to understand and combat this trend. One related growing stream of research explores the role of the built environment and the transport system on an individual's weight. However, results from many of the studies conducted have been contradictory. One of the primary causes of these contradictions is due to the way the neighborhood area is defined, which directly affects how the built environment variables are calculated in GIS. The potential impacts on regression analysis resulting from different data aggregation methods are well documented in spatial studies, geography and regional planning fields, and it is primarily referred to as the Modifiable Aerial Unit Problem (MAUP). In this paper, the focus is on reducing the error caused by MAUP by introducing a new data aggregation method. Individual health and lifestyle data are obtained from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey, and the relationship between the built environment and obesity is evaluated using a discrete choice model. The proposed aggregation method is evaluated across three spatial scales, and compared against a conventional data aggregation method (i.e. utilizing predefined administrative boundaries such as census tracts). The results reveal a stronger relationship between land use variables and obesity when the proposed aggregation method is implemented.

This paper is relevant primarily to researchers as it provides an improved aggregation method to deal with some of the privacy restrictions of surveys. It is also relevant to practitioners and policy makers by quantifying the association between specific built environment variables and obesity.

Title: A Bi-Level Optimization Model For The Development Of Real-Time Strategies To Minimize Epidemic Spreading Risk In Air Traffic Networks

Abstract: It is important to understand how epidemics spread to new regions via the global air traffic network in order to develop effective strategies for outbreak control. Various studies have focused on predicting epidemic spread via the complex air traffic network. However, there is a gap in the literature demanding real-time predictive models that exploit the heterogeneous nature of the air travel pattern to optimize decision making among a set of potential control strategies. A bi-level optimization model is proposed to solve the resource allocation problem for an on-going epidemic spreading via the air traffic network. The upper level objective is to optimize the distribution of limited resources for epidemic control while the lower level simulation model computes the risk posed to the network under possible scenarios. Results from a demonstration network highlight the advantages of this model. A case study is also conducted which evaluates the risk posed by Ebola to the United States via the domestic air traffic network. The results demonstrate the ability of the model to develop real-time strategies which account for the heterogeneous nature of the air traffic network and the complex dynamics of epidemic spread.

Title: On System Optimal Dynamic Lane Reversal To Improve Traffic Efficiency For Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract: As a future of autonomous vehicles becomes more certain, transport network managers may seek ways to reinvent elements of the traffic network to improve efficiency. One possibility is dynamic lane reversal, in which the network operator makes use of AV communications and behavior to change the direction of flow on a road link at smaller time intervals than would be possible with human drivers. While much research is looking at the mechanical details of AVs, this work focuses on a planning application in which AVs are already present in order to motivate the need for future research. We examine a novel extension to an established system optimal dynamic traffic assignment model based on the cell transmission model. The model determines the optimal lane configuration at small space-time intervals. Results demonstrate the model on a single link and a grid network, exploring the dynamic demand scenarios which are most conducive to increasing system efficiency with dynamic lane reversal.

Title: On System Optimal Dynamic Lane Reversal To Improve Traffic Efficiency For Autonomous Vehicles

Abstract: Dynamic traffic assignment has received an increasing amount of attention in recent years, with numerous examples of practical implementations. This work adds to the existing body of literature by describing the ongoing experience of building the first large-scale simulation-based DTA model in Australia. We provide a summary of the input data for the model and then focus on an in-depth discussion and analysis of model output and the calibration process. Current results put 80% of the 322 calibration points spread across the network within an acceptable bound of error, but the project found that it was also important to consider alternative metrics of network performance so as not to neglect other aspects of model realism. In the future, the DTA model described here could aid in evaluating important policy decisions and infrastructural development in the context of the macro/meso-scale network operation. Additionally, this project serves as a proof of concept for the Australia region and may provide valuable insight to other practitioners interested in emerging areas of transport planning and traffic modeling.

Title: Do Travellers Strategize When Selecting Their Transit Stop?

Abstract: This research aims to study the use of behavioral travel modeling approaches in transit users' stop choice behavior. Several model structures like MNL, NL, Mixed MNL and Mixed NL are used for this purpose where stops are segmented based on travel schemes. Stop choice attributes considered in the modelling exercise include facility attributes, path attributes associated with each stop, correction factors to address the correlation between the paths and users' socio-economic factors. The data used in this research was taken from the household travel survey (HTS) of 2009 in Southeast Queensland (SEQ), Australia.
This study shows that transit users use travel schemes like minimizing travel time and minimizing access time to choose their access stop. They even couple these schemes to access stops. It is shown in the study that path attributes along with some stop attributes affect the decision of transit users. Path attributes like walking time, number of transfers, travel time are considered jointly with stop attributes to examine their importance on decision about transit usage. The results show that the walking time needed to access the preferred stop is highly valued compared to the travel time or walking time in the path. Users seem to prefer choosing stops with more direct routes (minimum transfer) and/or more route options to reach the destination.

Title: Estimating risk Attitude and Risk perception in Car following

Abstract: Theoretical developments in decision-making research enable us to consider the car-following behaviour from a new angle. However, the application of these theories in modelling car-following behaviour has been rarely seen. This research studies different car-following situations based on the vehicle type of leader and follower. Established on the Expected Utility Theory, a new car-following model incorporating risk attitude and perception, two important concepts from behavioural economics is shown. Risk attitude and perception are then explicitly defined in the context of transport research. Constant Relative Risk Aversion (CRRA) model is adopted for the estimation of risk attitude. Risk perception is assumed to be related to the stochasticity of the spacing perceived by drivers. The risk attitude and perception are successfully estimated using the Next-Generation Simulation (NGSIM) data. We find that drivers are risk averse while following a vehicle. The values of risk attitude of most drivers are around 0.5, which is consistent with a previous study by Vinayak et al. (34). Differences of risk attitude and perception among drivers are found in the current study. The proposed model is also used for the prediction of speed in different types of car following with reasonable accuracy. The future study will focus on the macroscopic properties of the model, such as flow-density relationships, average travel times and average delay. Further, the lane-changing behaviour will be considered in this stochastic framework.

Title: Accounting For Transport Impacts On The Economy: An Integrated Computable General Equilibrium And Transport Model

Abstract: The use of separate transport and economic models in urban planning provides a limited view of economic impacts, restricts the testing of network design options and lengthens the planning process. Furthermore, the standard methodology for economic appraisal assumes partial economic equilibrium and cannot determine the distribution of impacts from the transport sector to particular households. Computable general equilibrium (CGE) models can capture general equilibrium effects and measure welfare at the household level, but mostly lack integration with transport models and do not represent all trip generators. This paper develops an integrated traffic assignment and spatial CGE model in nonlinear complementarity form. The CGE submodel generates commuting, shopping and leisure trips as inputs into the transport submodel, which then assigns trips to the network according to user equilibrium. The resulting travel times then feed back into household prices and freight  margins. Households and firms fully account for travel times in decisions on where to shop, how much labor to supply and where to source production inputs. Calibration and applications of the model are demonstrated for 14 regions and 2 industries across Sydney using GAMS/PATH on the NEOS server. The welfare of various network improvements is 16 measured using equivalent variations.

Title: A Strategic User Equilibrium For Independently Distributed Origin-Destination Demands

Abstract:  This paper proposes an extension of the strategic user equilibrium proposed by (1) and (2). The proposed model relaxes the assumption of proportional OD demand, as it accounts for users' strategic link choice under independently distributed OD demands. The convexity of the mathematical formulation is proved when each OD demand is assumed to follow a Poisson distribution independently; link flow distributions and users' strategic link choice are also proved to be unique. Network performance measures are given analytically. A numerical analysis is conducted on the Sioux Falls network. A Monte Carlo method is depicted to simulate network performance measures, which are then compared to the results computed from the analytical expression. It is illustrated that the model is capable of accounting for demand volatility while maintaining computation simplicity.

Title: An Exploratory Assessment of the Associations between the Urban Environment and Obesity

Abstract:    Obesity and other chronic diseases are becoming more prevalent, as such researchers are trying to examine and combat this trend. A number of studies have shown an association between the built environment and walking. Other studies have shown an association between the built environment and health outcomes. However, contradictory associations have been reported. Review papers have assigned the blame to the well known Modifiable Aerial Unit Problem (MAUP). In this study a large set of data on urban environment in Sydney has been collated and processed to obtain a set of objective urban variables. These variables are guided by the principle concepts of how the urban environment may affect travel behaviour. The obesity and other individual data are obtained from the Household, Income and Labour Dynamics in Australia (HILDA) survey. The MAUP has been addressed through an innovative aggregation method, and have been shown to relate to the probability of being obese using a logit model. The self-selection issue has been addressed by removing the entries that selected their place of residence based on proximity to destinations.

Title: Modelling Strategic Interactions of Driver Manoeuvres

Abstract:  Game theory is the study of mathematical models of interaction. In this thesis, it is used to model the interaction of drivers on the road. The study contributes to safety design by better understanding behavioural norms of interaction.

Through a game-theoretic approach drivers are assumed to make the best action for themselves, taking into account the observed or predicted action of the competing individual. In this way drivers act according to the interdependence between their own actions and the actions of their competitor. Game theory thusly differentiates from traditional safety modelling approaches that consider drivers acting to one-directional influence. The approach is more holistic and results in a more precise analysis.

Further, as game-theoretic models investigate fundamental interaction behaviour, the study findings are generalizable beyond the traffic contexts studied.

Resources for this project include non-exhaustively the Australian School of Business Experimental Economics Laboratory (Quad1041) and the TRACSLab Driving Simulator (Building H20, LG8).

Title: The impact of uncertainty on strategic network design projects

Abstract:    This work addresses the traffic network design problem (NDP), where the planner seeks the optimal locations in a network to which add vehicle capacity in order to minimize an objective, while staying within a budget. While traditionally deterministic, this work expands the NDP to include day-to-day uncertainties in travel demand and link capacity. Specifically, this project proposes a network design formulation that uses a strategic behaviour approach, in which total demand and link capacity are treated as random variables and a strategic user equilibrium results in fixed equilibrium link proportions.  The bi-level model is formulated, system performance metrics derived, and then a solution method is developed based on a tailored genetic algorithm. Results under varying levels of volatility reflect possible suboptimal project selection when using a deterministic modelling approach.

Title: The implications of volatility in day-to-day travel flow and road capacity on traffic network design projects'

Abstract: This work addresses the traffic network design problem when day-to-day uncertainties in travel demand and link capacity are taken into account. Specifically, this work proposes a network design formulation that uses a strategic behavior approach, where total demand and link capacity are treated as random variables and a strategic user equilibrium results in fixed equilibrium link proportions. The bilevel model is formulated, system performance metrics derived, and then a solution method is developed based on a tailored genetic algorithm. Results under varying levels of volatility reflect possible suboptimal project selection when using a deterministic modeling approach.

Title: A Novel System of Disaggregate Models for Travel Demand Modelling, Using Decision Tree and Random Forest Concepts

Abstract: This research attempts to address the gap between research and practical transport demand models. Evolution of travel demand models started from the early paper and pencil versions of conventional four-step models of the late 50s and proceeded to the activity-based models. During this transition the emphasis shifted from aggregate to disaggregate models, whereby researchers increasingly paid attention to individual decision making regarding daily activities. This alteration engendered a conspicuous disparity between aggregate and disaggregate models regarding their practicality, precision and policy sensitivity level. This disparity is the main attention of this paper. Unlike the four-step models, a highly disaggregate travel demand modelling structure is proposed in this paper in which trip purpose, mode of transport, time of day, commute distance and attributes of trip destination are modelled. Unlike activity-based models, the proposed method is computational efficient and cost effective making it attractive for small or medium size cities. Destination choice problem is decomposed from the framework by using the attributes of the destination rather than its actual location. All the decisions are modelled using Decision Tree (DT), a Modified version of Decision Tree (MDT), and Random Forest (RF). The model estimation practice is done using the Victorian Integrated Survey of Travel and Activity (VISTA) of 2007 as the training set, and its transferability is examined by utilizing the 2009 year of the same dataset. As the results show RF and DT system of models have a high disaggregate accuracy, whereas MDT and RF system of models predict the aggregate trip patterns in the test dataset more similar to the observations.

Title: A Residential Relocation Timing and Tenure Choice Modelling Structure: Competing Hazard Based or Cause-Specific Formulation?

Abstract: Land use is largely affected by people’s decisions on job and residential relocation as well as decisions by home developers and job providers. In regards to residential relocation decision-making, four fundamental components can be identified: 1) reason(s) of relocation, 2) relocation timing, 3) choosing the next living place, and 4) tenure choice. This paper focuses on the time of relocation and the tenure choice, using the hazard-based structure. A hazard-based model coupled with a logit model is compared against a competing hazard-based model. These two formulations represent two approaches that individuals may consider when evaluating their alternatives. A longitudinal data collected in Australia from the Household, Income, and Labour Dynamics Australia Survey (HILDA) is utilized in this study for developing the models. Several socio-demographic, economic and land use variables are employed to model the behaviour of decision-making unit which mainly consists of a household. It was found that the competing hazard model marginally outperforms the cause-specific structure.

Title: A Decision Support System For A Real-Time Field Service Engineer Scheduling Problem With Emergencies And Collaborations

Abstract: We treat a dynamic routing and scheduling problem by repeatedly re-planning using a heuristic for solving a variety of the Vehicle Routing Problem. The problem we treat occurs in the situation when Field Service Engineers are assigned a sequence of jobs to attend. The jobs are geographically distributed and not all jobs to be undertaken are known in advance of planning. This dynamic occurrence of job requests is stochastic. Jobs are assigned an Emergency Level, which is the highest for the repair jobs involving a person in danger. In addition some jobs require two engineers to attend. We refer to such jobs as collaborative. Our approach re-schedules the pending jobs in an event-driven manner. The event-driven scheduling process ensures that jobs of high importance, with a high emergency level, are completed promptly. The proposed Decision Support System assists in the decision making concerning the management of Field Service Engineers, in the case when real-time information is available. Its architecture includes two main modules: Simulation Engine and Indigo Solver, using a flexible heuristic based on an Adaptive Large Neighborhood Search. We find that our approach of event-driven re-planning is able to plan for real-world scenarios using significantly fewer resources than are employed in practice.

Title: Hazard Based Modelling of Vehicle Selection in Carsharing Systems.

Abstract: Carsharing, as an alternative to private vehicle ownership, has spread worldwide in recent years due to its potential of reducing congestion, improving auto utilization rate and limiting the environmental impact of emissions release. To determine the most efficient allocation of resources within a carsharing programme, it is critical to understand what factors affect the users’ behaviour when selecting vehicles which have been little attended to in the literature. This study attempts to investigate the importance of users’ attributes and fleet characteristics on choice set formation behaviour in selecting vehicles using a Spatial Hazard Based Model (SHBM). In the SHBM model, “distance to the carsharing facility (vehicle pod)” is considered as the prospective decision criteria that carsharing users follow when selecting a vehicle among a set of alternatives This variable is analogous to the duration in a conventional hazard-based model Other factors, such as user socio-demographic attributes, vehicle characteristics, land use type of the trip origin, etc., collected from the Australian carsharing company GoGet are utilized for model estimation. A number of forms of parametric SHBMs are tested to determine the best fit to the data. The accelerated failure time model with a Log-logistic distribution was found to provide the best fit. The estimation results of the coefficients of the parameters suggest that users who do not own a private vehicle, frequent users, elderly users and users with a restriction in the ability to drive tend to consider closer vehicle pods. These findings can provide a starting point for carsharing organisations to optimize their pod locations and types of cars available at different pods to maximize usage.

Title: Reliability- and Median-Based Identification of Toll Locations in Connected Vehicle Context

Abstract: In anticipation of pervasive onboard navigation and electronic payment associated with connected vehicle technology, universal dynamic tolling is a promising possibility for future congestion management. In order to take advantage of these advancements, planners must consider which metrics should be used for the selection and performance evaluation of tolls.

This work considers two metrics: median travel time and reliability measured with the 80th percentile travel time index. Each metric is tested for the identification of candidate tolling facilities and for the evaluation of the toll's performance. Using data mining techniques on measured volumes and speeds from California freeways, test tolls are simulated based on the two identification metrics

We find that both metrics contribute to the assessment of the toll's success, but travel time reliability is a stronger metric for determining the most effective locations for imposing tolls.

Title: A maximum likelihood estimation of trip tables for the strategic user equilibrium (StrUE) Model

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel framework to estimate trip tables for the strategic user equilibrium traffic assignment model. The proposed framework uses a bi-level estimation model, where the upper-level is a new maximum likelihood estimation method and the lower-level is the strategic user equilibrium assignment model which accounts for some aspects of day-to-day volatility in traffic flow. The maximum likelihood method proposed in this paper illustrates its ability to utilize information from day-to-day observed link flows in order to provide a unique estimation of the total trip demand distribution. This is accomplished by passing the total trip demand distribution to the strategic user equilibrium model to produce a set of link flow distributions which can then be compared to the link level observations. The mathematical proof demonstrates the convexity of the model. In addition, a numerical analysis is conducted on a test network to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed framework.

Title: Dynamic User Optimal traffic Assignment with Recourse

Abstract: Limitations of static network equilibrium models have led to numerous research efforts in predicting the temporal and spatial traffic conditions throughout road networks.   Static models do not account for the dynamic nature of traffic.  Accordingly, new approaches to depict these scenarios have been formulated, such as Dynamic User Optimal (DUO).  This study extends DUO to DUO with recourse (DUOR) where a user can also alter their journey en-route dependent on the traffic conditions and the available information through ITS technology.
This study proposes the modelling framework Dynamic User Optimal with Recourse using a Cell Transmission Model (DUOR-CTM).  The model focuses on initially understanding whether a Dynamic User Optimal with Recourse (DUOR) solution arises and also determines the impact of information on the user optimal travel cost.  The study presents the results of a sample network and highlights the need to account for information in a dynamic context.
