Engage our expertise

Complex water issues are foremost on the minds of politicians, researchers, communities, economists and industries. The key strength of the UNSW Global Water Institute is our scope, which is exceptionally broad. This means we can draw from expertise across multiple faculties, schools and centres to conceive, test and implement solutions to water challenges. Explore our capabilities and research centres below.
Water challenges
While there are many different ways to consider water, each of our key capabilities aligns with one or more of the water challenges below. When expertise in more than one area is needed, UNSW-GWI can facilitate these inter-disciplinary projects and connections:
• adapting to effects of climate change
• addressing water scarcity and access to good quality water
• water and wastewater treatment and reuse
• arresting the rapid loss of aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem decline
• reducing health impacts of poor water quality
• enabling more efficient irrigation to meet demand for food
• sourcing renewable hydropower sustainably
• providing education and increased capacity
• implementing smart policy, robust governance and resilient institutions
• improving positive interactions between water and social science
• considering water and wastewater used for epidemiology.
