First in Australia for educational partnership with Google
School members are the only Australian educators to win the honour of being YouTube Partners in Education.
Two members of the school, Dr Chris Tisdell and A/Prof Norman Wildberger, have formed educational partnerships with internet giant Google, invited to become “YouTube Partners in Education”. Such a partnership enables innovative and wide-ranging advancements in the creation and sharing of online learning videos.
Co-op scholarships
The UNSW Co-op Program, opens in a new window is a career development scheme that helps to prepare UNSW scholars for work in industry after graduation. The program incorporates industry experience, leadership and professional development, networking, mentoring, and financial support.
Currently, there are two different scholarships on offer for students of Mathematics and Statistics: An Advanced Mathematics Co-op Scholarship, opens in a new window, and a Data Science and Decisions Co-op Scholarship, opens in a new window.
Industry sponsors for these scholarships include Commonwealth Bank, the Reserve Bank, Macquarie Group, Solar Analytics, and PwC.
Staff partnerships
Professor Chris Tisdell is an Education Advisory Board Member for Cluey Learning and an Academic Advisory Board Member for Studiosity. He previously consulted as an educational advisor for the ABC's Splash! initiative which aimed to provide engaging learning resources mapped to the Australian curriculum.
Degrees and courses
The school has taught a second-year course on Data Management for Statistical Analysis, sponsored by SAS, since 2005. SAS awarded the school a major international prize for the venture.
UNSW's Master of Financial Mathematics, opens in a new window degree has been delivering top quality education to provide students with a path to high-level careers in the financial industry for many years.
Prizes
The following industry sponsored prizes are awarded to students within the school:
- The SAS Institute Australia Prize - For the student with the best performance in MATH2871 Data Management for Statistical Analysis.
- The Westpac Prize - For the student with the best performance in MATH2831 Linear Models or MATH2931 Higher Linear Models.
- The Weatherzone Prize (two prizes) - For the second year student with the best performance in MATH2241 Introduction to Atmosphere and Ocean Dynamics, and the third year student with the best performance in MATH3261 Fluids, Oceans and Climate.
Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI)
The School of Mathematics and Statistics is a proud member of the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI), which is a not-for-profit peak body for the mathematical sciences. AMSI champions mathematics, statistics and data science for Australia’s advancement through advocacy, facilitation, and collaboration. AMSI’s activities fall largely into three strategic areas – school education, research and higher education, and industry engagement.
The 2024 State of Mathematical Sciences is the eighth edition of AMSI’s periodic discipline profile for mathematics and statistics, opens in a new window, providing a detailed snapshot of the condition of the mathematical sciences at all stages of the continuum – from the classroom and higher education through to research and development, workforce utilisation and innovation by commerce and industry. This publication brings together diverse information from many sources, complemented with AMSI research and the latest data from the 2022 PISA survey of academic performance in secondary schools. This edition also includes data on university prerequisites and the mathematical workforce.
You can support AMSI’s advocacy work by donating to the AMSI Foundation, opens in a new window.
