The tensile test piece is mounted into the grips of the tensile test machine. The grips are pulled apart hydraulically at a constant rate. The applied load is measured by a load cell and the extension by an extensometer.
As the test is normally destructive, the test piece is permanently deformed and usually fractured in the test.
