As the global financial crisis worsens, many companies are debating whether to continue pursuing social and environmental goals when profits are shrinking and workers are being laid off.
Not-for-profit organisations, too, are having to cope with shrinking resources at a time when demand for their services is increasing.
Professor Peter Shergold, from the Centre for Social Impact at UNSW, argues that now is the time when values of corporate social responsibility are most needed if businesses are to survive.
