This is an industry project with BOC in collaboration with PARTCAT and Water Research Centre at School of Chemical Engineering. The student will be supervised by an expert Senior Engineer in industry. The student is expected to deliver a research report capturing findings and his/her recommendation of 3Rs for acetylene production process and/or similar. The student will be practicing sampling of liquid waste from plant scale production, operating titration/neutralization in wet chemistry lab at UNSW, research alternative and/or substitution species used in liquor, minimizing environmental impacts. The student is expected to give verbal presentation to industry partner, BOC and key stakeholders at regular intervals. The student may be eligible for 30 days of industrial training placement.

The student will:
- conduct physical sizing and chemical characterization of lime slurry as a by-product from carbide and water reaction.
- research, analysis primary data from above characterization results, conversion of lime slurry with the focus on N-P-K value potential for fertilizer uses.
- Conduct titration and/or neutralization verification on lime slurry samples
- Research the use of lime slurry for surface treatment, pH correction treatment for wastewater, etc.. (EIGA 143)
- Identify environmental standards for use lime slurry as a by-product.
