If you’re looking to study business at a postgraduate level and wondering what exactly a CPA is? Then we’re here to help.

CPA stands for Certified Practising Accountant, and it means you’re a finance, accounting and business professional with a specific qualification. Having a CPA means you’re highly respected and regarded by employers and clients, and gives you an internationally recognised qualification.

CPA Australia is also one of the world’s largest accounting bodies, supporting and representing the views and concerns of members in more than 100 countries. Having a CPA opens up opportunities around the world and gives your career a global boost.

So, does anyone who has studied finance, accounting or business automatically become a CPA?

The short answer is no. A CPA is a special qualification to mark a high level of professional competence, so it’s definitely something to strive for to bring your career to the next level. Being a qualified CPA, according to CPA Australia, ‘indicates a soundness in depth, breadth and quality of knowledge in the accounting and finance profession’.

Are all accountants CPAs?

Here’s a riddle for you: all CPAs are accountants, but not all accountants are CPAs! An accountant is someone who completed a Bachelor degree in accounting, whereas a CPA is an accountant who has earned their CPA licence through ongoing higher education, experience, and by passing the necessary exams. This is what the redesigned Master of Professional Accounting Extension is designed to help you do.

How can I become a Certified Practising Accountant?

To become a CPA in Australia, you need to complete a degree or postgraduate award recognised by CPA Australia, complete the CPA Program, including three years of professional experience in finance, accounting or business, undertake continuing professional development activities each year, and comply with a strict code of conduct set by CPA Australia.

To offer public accounting services, CPAs must also complete CPA Australia's Public Practice Program and hold a Public Practice Certificate in accordance with the CPA Australia's By-Laws.

Is it compulsory to complete CPA exams?

A CPA is a compulsory accreditation in the profession – but not all degree prepare you for the external exams. That’s where our MPAX comes in: the unique specialisation offers support and preparation for students to complete their CPA exams and take their career to the next level.
