Dr Stanford is a senior orthopaedic surgeon at Prince of Wales Hospital with a special interest in spinal cord injury. He was Australian Principal Investigator for the Riluzole in Spinal Cord Injury Study, a double bind randomised trial of riluzole in acute cervical spinal cord injury.

Dr Stanford's current research interest is in acute assessment of spinal cord injury and improving data collection to establish a platform for research into outcomes of early interventions in acute spinal cord injury. He is collaborating with a network of colleagues in NSW on a project called Acute Management of Spinal Cord Injury (AMOSCI).
