Dr Éidín Ní Shé (BA, MSc, PhD) is a senior lecturer in health management at the School of Population Health. She has expertise in leading projects in the areas of co-design, consumer engagement, evaluation and health systems. Prior to joining UNSW School of Population Health Éidín worked as a research fellow in the University College Dublin Centre (UCD) for Interdisciplinary Research Education and Innovation in Health Systems in Ireland. She worked across the centre advancing work in systems thinking, interdisciplinary and intersectoral working, consumer involvement, evidence synthesis, as well as contributing to methodological innovation and developing strong networks and partnerships. Her projects have included work on assisted decision making, frailty pathway co-design, and patient safety to support staff in speaking up. Prior to joining UCD, she worked at the Centre for Local Government at the University of Technology Sydney, The Institute of Resilient Regions at the University of Southern Queensland, the Department of General Practice at the University of Melbourne and the Department of Politics and Public Administration in the University of Limerick.

Current and recently completed research activities include:
ECLECTIC-Embedding Collective Leadership to Foster Collaborative Inter-professional Working in the Care of Older People- This project is ongoing and is working with the Irish national clinical program for older people to test collective leadership interventions to foster collaborative inter-professional working in the care of older people between acute and the community. PADMACS- Promoting Assisted Decision Making in Acute Care Settings for Care Planning Purposes- This study is currently ongoing and is focused on developing an educational serious game to promote understanding of Assisted Decision-Making among healthcare professionals working in an acute care setting, and encourage their adoption of this understanding into their care planning with older people. The project was developed in collaboration with the Royal College of Physician of Ireland, St. Vincent’s University Hospital, the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland and Family Carers Ireland. UCD Public and Patient Involvement Program- I was the research lead for public and patient involvement across University College Dublin. The focus was on enabling seldom heard voices in health and social care research. I actively engaged with ten external NGO partners and work across UCD with our academic champions. Our research outputs included a realist review on what mechanisms enable the involvement of seldom heard voices and a recent paper on identifying values to enable public and patient involvement at the pre-commencement stage of research projects
SAFE-Systematic Approach to Improving Care for Frail Older Patients- The aim of this completed study was to co-design a frail older person’s pathways and develop an implementation model for incorporating these pathways in the Irish setting. This project worked in partnerships with patient and public partners from Age Action, Disability Federation of Ireland, Sage and the Older People’s Empowerment Network. Read our outputs here
Imbuing Medical Professionalism in Relation to Safety Project-This project aimed to raise awareness of and ultimately imbue medical professionalism in the culture within 2 hospital sites. The distinct research objective was to determine whether a customised education intervention with junior doctors could change culture and practice. Our designed serious game called: PlayDecide: Patient Safety is a serious game learning tool for health professionals to discuss patient safety and error reporting. Read more here
