Associate Professor Devaki Nambiar

Devaki Nambiar is Program Director, Healthier Societies Strategy at the George Institute for Global Health India with appointments at the Manipal Academy of Higher Education, India, the University of New South Wales, Australia and the Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. She has experience of almost two decades conducting research across a dozen Indian states and half a dozen Low and Middle Income Countries on decision-maker demand-driven research as well as technical assistance, postgraduate teaching in Health Policy and Systems Research,  and health systems policy development with an emphasis on social exclusion, health equity and health for all. She has taught online and blended courses in the US as well as India using a variety of platforms with class sizes ranging from 5 to 70.

 Dr. Nambiar has also supported training workshops and capacity building related to health inequality monitoring (in four of six WHO regions as well as country governments of Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and Iran) as well as national programme equity, rights, and gender re-orientation, and supported adult learning/ curriculum design related to health systems, health equity research, evidence synthesis, systems thinking, and social participation/community action for health.

A former Fulbright, Fogarty and NIH scholar, and Intermediate Fellow in Public Health from the Wellcome Trust/Department of Biotechnology India Alliance, she is a Lancet-Chatham House Commissioner on Population Health Post COVID-19 and Lancet Commissioner on Sustainable Health Care, as well as advisor to Lancet Commissions on Reimagining India’s Health System as well as Women and Cancer. She has served as an External Member of the World Health Organisation [WHO] Guidelines Review Committee and has advised the WHO on guideline development to leave no one behind. She is also a Board Member of Health Systems Global and serves on the Research Advisory Board of the Institute of Public Health, Bengaluru, India.

Dr. Nambiar was the recipient of the 2018 Emerging Leader Award from the Royal Society for Tropical Medicine & Hygiene. She received her doctorate in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in 2009.
