This project aims to develop theoretical understanding of how metacognitive ability is related across different face processing tasks. Meta-cognition is defined as a person's ability to think about their own thinking and task performance - a skill that is important in many applied face processing tasks. For example when eyewitnesses rate their confidence that they have picked out a criminal from a police line-up, or when a facial forensic comparison expert assesses the strength of evidence provided by a CCTV image of a perpetrator. People's confidence in these decisions can have profound impacts in forensic and security settings, but the cognitive and perceptual processes involved are not understood. The PhD student will conduct their research as part of a larger project that aims to develop individual difference tests, training approaches and best-practice policies that can be used to improve the quality of face identity evidence used in applied settings.
