Mathematicians Gary Froyland, David Harvey and Lee Zhao all received highly-deserved promotions in the most recent round.
Congratulations to three academics from the School of Mathematics and Statistics who were recently promoted (effective 1 Jan 2025).
Gary Froyland - promoted to Scientia Professor
Gary has received a trove of accolades for his world-class research, including an Australian Research Council Laureate Fellowship in 2023. He was named a Fellow of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics in 2021, and selected as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 2020 for his eminent research in the fields of dynamical systems, ergodic theory and discrete optimisation.
He currently leads the ARC Laureate Centre for Dynamical Systems and Data.
"Congratulations to Gary Froyland, who was already Professor but will now be Scientia Professor", said Head of the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Professor Andrew Francis. "This highly competitive extra recognition comes in response to his research performance, and transformative outward-looking role."
David Harvey - promoted to Professor
Commencing as a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 2011, David's impressive achievements include winning the 2022 N.G. de Bruijn Medal, and receiving the Australian Mathematical Society Medal in 2019. He also has an ARC Future Fellowship and an ARC Discovery Early Career Researcher Award under his belt.
His work caused a media stir locally and internationally in 2019, when he and a collaborator cracked a decades-long maths problem. They developed a new method for multiplying huge numbers, enabling computers to conduct the multiplication much more rapidly.
"Congratulations to David Harvey for being promoted to full Professor", said Prof. Francis. "This is just recognition for his significant research achievements in number theory, and for his leadership contributions within and outside the university. A great milestone to celebrate!"
Lee Zhao - promoted to Associate Professor
Prior to joining the School of Mathematics and Statistics in 2015, Lee held various positions including at the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the United States Military Academy, the Department of Mathematics at the University of Toronto in Canada, the Institutionen för Matematik of the Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan in Sweden, and the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. He has also held several visiting roles at institutions across the world. He has garnered numerous grants supporting his research.
“Please join me in congratulating Lee Zhao on his successful promotion to Associate Professor!", said Prof. Francis.
"A well-deserved recognition of his great contributions in research, teaching, and service over the years.”
