We take a look back at the month that was for the UNSW sporting community.
July was a standout month for the UNSW sports community, marked by impressive performances and notable achievements. Our athletes competing across a range of sports, both nationally and internationally. Here’s a recap of the key highlights from an eventful month.
Dominic Curtin and Mark Crosbee represented UNSW at the 2024 ICF Junior and Under 23 Canoe Slalom World Championships in Slovakia. Dominic showed versatility and tenacity, finishing 43rd in the Men's Kayak U/23, 32nd in the Men’s Canoe U/23, and an impressive 11th in the Men’s Kayak Cross U/23. Mark also delivered commendable performances, finishing 40th in the Men's Kayak U/23, 11th in the Men’s Canoe U/23, and 47th in the Men’s Kayak Cross U/23.
Sixteen UNSW representatives travelled to the Sunshine Coast to compete in the UniSport 3x3 Basketball Hustle Nationals. The team faced tough competition and finished 15th overall with some very close losses.
The 2024 T20 Cricket UniSport Nationals, also held on the Sunshine Coast, saw UNSW secure an impressive 5th place finish. The team clinched a thrilling victory against Western Sydney University by 5 runs in the 5th v 6th matchup. In a group match, they posted an incredible 162 runs off 20 overs but were narrowly defeated by the eventual winners, the University of Queensland.
In netball, UNSW competed in the UNE Winter Series Intervarsity tournament in Armidale. Our mixed team emerged victorious, taking home the trophy. The tournament, hosted by the University of New England, featured teams from UNE, USYD, ANU, and the Northern NSW Under 23s State team.
Tamsin Colley added another gold medal to her impressive 2024 tally by winning the Open Women’s Para 2km event at the NSW Short Course Cross Championship. Tamsin’s continued success and determination in para-athletics is incredibly inspiring and we are sure there are big things coming in her future.
Our handball team competed at the Oceania Club Championships in Canberra, where the men’s team finished 7th, securing a victory against West Adelaide in the 7th place matchup. Despite facing several injuries, the team were very unlucky not to go further in the tournament.
Jamieson Leeson, in preparation for the upcoming 2024 Paris Paralympics, secured two silver medals in the Boccia New Tapei World Cup in both singles and pairs. Jamieson will look to go one better in the Paralympics kicking off August 28th.
As part of our partnership with the Sydney Swans, we took 330 students to witness the Round 20 clash against the Western Bulldogs at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Although the Swans were beaten 87-48, it was a fantastic day that strengthened our partnership and provided students with the opportunity to experience an AFL game, some for the very first time.
Lara Hausegger, one of our elite athletes and a second-round selection in 2023 for the Sydney Swans AFLW squad, extended her contract with the team until the end of 2026. This extension is a testament to Lara’s potential and the promising career that lies ahead.
July was another widely diverse month of achievements - from canoe slalom and basketball to cricket, netball, cross country, handball, and AFL, our athletes demonstrated their excellence on both the domestic and international stages. As we look ahead, we celebrate the victories and milestones of July, we keep our eyes glued to the TV for the Paris Olympic Games and hopefully some more medals for UNSW in August.
