Each year GradConnections in partnership with the Australian Financial Review releases a list of the Top 100 Future Leaders in categories spanning sustainability, social impact, big data, innovation, marketing and more.  The awards recognise the contributions and achievements of well-rounded University students and their commitment to their sector and purpose. This important characteristic or desire to work in an area that aligns with their personal interests and values has long been a quality Co-op has recognised in the selection process, and is also one that drives leaders to excel. The UNSW Co-op Office is delighted to share that four 2024 graduating Co-op scholars were nominated for the AFR Top 100 Future Leaders Awards, with two of them winning the awards in their category.

We’re proud to congratulate finalists, Vedita Sudesh (Commerce Information Systems), and Thomas Smelt (Data Science & Decisions) for their acknowledged excellence, along with award recipients, Actuarial Studies scholar Nala Hong, winner of the Quantium Data Science Award,  and Business Information Systems (BIS) scholar Himanshu Singh, winner of the EY Innovation Award.

This cohort, who persevered through the impact of COVID-19 on both their studies and industry placement experiences, were challenged to develop their skills, passions and hobbies in new and different ways, has perhaps become more agile, and competitive than ever.

Being recognised as a leader feels like the culmination of all my hard work during my Co-op placements. The journey has been incredibly fulfilling and reinforcing of my commitment to the field.

Similarly, BIS scholar Himanshu confirmed that the award “opens up many doors for [award winners/finalists] and expands the opportunity and impact they can make after graduation. [It] is also another way to stand out in the highly competitive job market and I’d highly recommend anyone considering the award to apply”.

At a special event held on campus to celebrate all UNSWTop100 Future Leaders finalists and winners. Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education & Student Experience, Professor Sarah Maddison congratulated students, highlighting UNSW’s commitment with the words “We take great pride in guiding and supporting our students to develop their skills, experiences, and knowledge, thereby helping them secure rewarding internship and graduate job opportunities."

Congratulations again to our 2024 finalists and winners, who join the prestigious ranks of Co-ops who have been named as finalists and winners in previous years, and we look forward to seeing more Co-op scholars recognised for their passion and purposeful commitment to paving their own path forward into industry.
