The Centre for the Future of the Legal Profession is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Felicity Bell as the Deputy Director, effective 18 March 2024.

In this role, Dr Bell will collaborate closely with Professor Michael Legg, Director of the Centre, and Vicki McNamara, Senior Research Associate to lead and advance the Centre’s strategic initiatives.

Bringing an international reputation as an expert in family law and legal professionalism, and in new technologies and their impact on lawyers’ practice and regulation, Dr Bell’s expertise stems from her work in empirical projects. Holding a Bachelor of Law (Hons I) from the University of Melbourne and a PhD from the University of Sydney, Dr. Bell previously served as a Senior Research Fellow for the Future of Law and Innovation in the Profession (FLIP) research stream at UNSW Law and Justice, alongside Professor Legg. Dr. Bell also spent time at the University of Wollongong as a Lecturer.

Dr Bell has co-authored the book Artificial Intelligence and the Legal Profession (Hart, 2020) with Professor Legg.

“I am delighted to join the Centre and work alongside Michael again. There are many external factors impacting the legal profession currently and I am looking forward to delivering on research projects that explore these issues and provide support to legal professionals,” Dr Bell said.

The Centre for the Future of the Legal Profession is led by UNSW Law & Justice and informed by the legal industry to support the profession in effectively navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by technology, innovation, and societal needs.
