The School of Aviation offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Aviation (management, flying and remotely piloted aircraft systems), including flight training and airborne, aviation and transport research. The Flying Operations Unit, located at Bankstown Airport, delivers flight training and supporting theory as required by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority and facilitates airborne research activities.

This is an academic position with the primary responsibilities of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate coursework levels in the area of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), with emphasis on RPAS/Drone Information Systems, RPAS/Drone Operations Management and RPAS/Drone Programming and Application. This position will support/or supervise higher degree by research students, Including supervising honours students. An Associate Lecturer (Level A) / Lecturer (Level B) / Senior Lecturer (Level C) is expected to establish a competitive research program and develop his/her scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.

The role of Associate Lecturer/Lecturer/Senior Lecturer reports to the Head of School and has no direct reports.

  • Specific responsibilities for this role include:

    LEVEL A:

    • Demonstrate a well-defined teaching philosophy that inspires student learning.
    • Conduct classes, assess student learning achievements and support students in line with UNSW policy and with the guidance of more senior academics.
    • Design and develop learning activities and resources and provide assessment and feedback using a range of appropriate approaches and learning environment with the support of more senior academics.
    • Support learning progression with students as individuals (through such activities as one-to-one consultation) and as a cohort (through general course related advice) to achieve positive learning and employability outcomes for students.
    • Manage course administration, including academic quality assurance.
    • Conduct research of international quality and publish in international refereed journals.
    • Support Higher Degree students supervision in accordance with discipline norms and UNSW policies.
    • Make contributions to the profession and/or discipline.
    • Ensure administrative paperwork is complete, correct and appropriately filed.
    • Other administrative duties as Head of School might require.
    • Align with and actively demonstrate the UNSW Values in Action: Our Behaviours and the UNSW Code of Conduct.
    • Cooperate with all health and safety policies and procedures of the university and take all reasonable care to ensure that your actions or omissions do not impact on the health and safety of yourself or others.

    LEVEL B:
    (in addition to the above)

    • Establish a competitive research program and develop his/or scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline.
    • Research of international quality completed and published in international refereed journals.
    • Obtaining research funding from competitive research grants schemes, and from industry.
    • Higher Degree students supervised in accordance with discipline norms and UNSW policies.
    • Presentation of research at national and international conferences.
    • Effective teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level including the delivery of lectures, seminars, and tutorials, development of course materials, marking and assessment, and consultation with students.
    • Involvement in broad administrative functions of the School and/or University, coordination of subjects, attend departmental and/or faculty meetings, involvement in Open Days and recruitment activities and play a major role in planning and/or committee work or other responsibilities, as directed by the Head of School.
    • Short course delivery in time and with student satisfaction.

    LEVEL C:
    (in addition to the Level A and B skills and responsibilities above)

    • Make significant contributions to the teaching effort of the institution and to lead a competitive research programme. Play a significant role in research projects including, where appropriate, leadership of a research team.
    • Deliver high quality teaching and student experience utilising sound pedagogical methodologies and innovative technologies and from time to time, deliver teaching across a broad engineering discipline.
    • Actively engage with industry and the community to develop significant productive relationships, attract industry funding, and participate in professional activities.
    • Maintain and develop scholarly, research and/or professional activities relevant to the profession or discipline. Lead the development of new course material in collaboration with other member of academic staff.
    • Take responsibility for course and programme coordination as required.
    • Undertake high-level administrative functions in the School
  • To be successful in this role you will have:

    LEVEL A:

    • A PhD (or soon to be awarded) in (Aviation) Business, Economics, Finance, or Management, and/or a related discipline, with emphasis on aviation and/or relevant work experience.
    • Proven commitment to proactively keeping up to date with discipline knowledge and developments.
    • Demonstrated track record of journal and/or conference proceedings publications relative to opportunity.
    • Knowledge of current and past practices in Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), with emphasis on RPAS/Drone Information Systems, RPAS/Drone Operations Management and RPAS/Drone Programming and Application.
    • Demonstrated successful teaching record in Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS).
    • Evidence of highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills.
    • An understanding of and commitment to UNSW’s aims, objectives and values in action, together with relevant policies and guidelines.
    • Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities and commitment to attending relevant health and safety training

    LEVEL B:
    (in addition to the above)

    • A demonstrated record in attracting research funds or providing advice to Aviation/Transport organisations.
    • Publications in top-tier international refereed journals as a lead author.
    • Demonstrated successful research record in an area of aviation/transport management, including RPAS, consistent with the profile of courses taught within the school.
    • Experience using and/or designing with educational technologies and online delivery methods.
    • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence (e.g., relevant discipline-based curriculum design and development at a variety of levels and scales).
    • Evidence of ability to support and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and support student equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives.
    • A track record of significant involvement with the profession and/or industry.
    • High level communication skills and ability to network effectively and interact with a diverse range of students and staff.
    • Demonstrated ability to work in a team, collaborate across disciplines and build effective relationships.

    LEVEL C:
    (
    in addition to the Level A and B skills and criteria above)

    • Demonstrated experience in teaching and learning design using a range of pedagogical approaches, development and delivery of courses and programs, at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level.
    • Demonstrated track record in research with outcomes of high quality and high international impact with clear evidence of the desire and ability to continually achieve research excellence as well as the capacity for research leadership.
    • Experience in implementing educational technologies and online delivery methods.
    • Evidence of teaching effectiveness and passion for educational excellence and fostering this in others.
    • Demonstrated success in initiating curriculum development and improvement.
    • Ability and capacity to implement required UNSW health and safety policies and procedures.
