Indigenous careers at UNSW

Personalise
Artist Dennis Golding takes inspiration of how the clans have used natural materials such as rock, plants, and shells to create cultural tools including flints, hooks, and nawis. These motifs are woven through a topographical patterning of the local coastlines where the saltwater frames the landscape.

Welcome from our Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous

To me UNSW has a unique vibe that is underpinned by our commitment to societal impact and embracing the wonderful contributions that Indigenous peoples bring to our university community. Our university is committed to not just increasing our Indigenous workforce but bringing people together to build a future that honours the legacy of our ancestors and contributes to the strong and positive positioning of our future generations. I would encourage any Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander peoples who have a passion and dedication to making a difference in our communities to consider working at UNSW.

Staff testimonials

My name is Angela Dos Santos, I am a Gumbaynggirr and Kwiamble woman having been brought up on Gumbaynggirr Country. I am a Scientia fellow within UNSW, serving as a clinical academic; full time research and two days a week in Campbelltown Hospital as a neurologist. I started working for UNSW in 2021 and what I love the most is all the opportunity UNSW brings. There are plenty of opportunities for collaboration and growth as a doctor and as a researcher.

Working for UNSW I’ve had the opportunity to grow professionally, I started as a junior and now a senior manager, over my 15+ years UNSW have supported and continue to support my career growth. One of the best things about working at UNSW is being able to have a work life balance, it’s incredibly valuable having UNSW support and understand the balance between a growing family and continuing a successful career. Diversity is also what makes UNSW a great place to work, the people have made this workplace a great place to be, and the learning never stops, as a proud Worimi, Wadi Wadi, Walbunga woman connecting with mob is important and our connection grows strong here, I look forward exciting things to come!

As a proud Bidjara Ghungalu & South Sea Islander Descent born and bred in Rockhampton QLD, it's important for me to be connected to the mob and community on which I live work and play. UNSW & Nura Gili Centre for Indigenous Programs has a been one of my homes away from home, having first studied here back in 2012, to now working here. UNSW fosters connection between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students and Staff through the many faculties and divisions, through events and gatherings that also involves the local Aboriginal Community members.
