Yunkang's research interests lie at the intersection of political economy, international relations, development, and area studies. His doctoral research examines China's economic engagement in Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on its role in the region’s energy transition and the dynamics between state and non-state actors.
Prior to this, he worked as a consultant at the UNESCO Regional Office in Bangkok, where he supported the implementation of a regional cooperative program on equitable education projects in Southeast Asia. He has also worked as an industrial research project mentor at a university and has some experience in the investment promotion and cooperation department of a government agency, as well as in the private sector and an international non-profit organization.
He holds an MA in International Development Studies and an MBA in Asia-Pacific Business. In addition, he is an affiliate of the Myanmar Research Centre at the ANU and serves as a country informant for the Asia-Europe Science & Technology Diplomacy Initiative of the Asia-Europe Foundation (ASEF) Singapore.
He has published several analytical pieces and articles in research institutions, journals, and media outlets, including the Asia Research Institute at the National University of Singapore, the Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre at the London School of Economics, Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia, East Asia Forum, Lianhe Zaobao, and Bangkok Post. He has also presented his work at international conferences.
