Shenyang began his PhD in February 2024, focusing on the application of computer vision to detect rip currents—a major coastal hazard worldwide. Rip currents are one of the main contributors to drowning, killing more people than shark attacks, floods, and hurricanes combined. Rip currents are narrow, fast-moving channels of water flowing seaward, often characterised by darker channels with fewer waves, less white foam, and significant water movement.
