James Zulfan

PhD Candidate
UNSW Water Research Laboratory
School of Civil and Environmental Engineering

James is completing a PhD at WRL, researching a sustainable low-head weir. This topic focusses on assessing a weir design in a holistic and sustainable way (environmental, social, and economic) with possibilities for hydropower integration. The research will also combine physical and numerical modelling to develop a low-impact flexible weir that is more resilient to climate change.

Previously, James has worked as a researcher at the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Housing, and was involved in dam construction projects in Indonesia, receiving a Civil Servant of the Year award in 2021. He finished his master's degree from IHE Delft, Netherlands in 2017, with a thesis that studied a river restoration project.

Research Interests: Physical modelling, hydraulic structures, sediment transport

Supervisors: Associate Professor Stefan Felder and Dr Laura Montano
