It was a wonderful experience to speak with these passionate and engaged students, some of whom, although not yet equipped with the vernacular to express their ambitions and professional aspirations, are willing to listen and learn about the opportunity soon to be made available to them. UNSW should be commended on their desires to contribute to our community's persistent endeavours to reduce disparities and soften the impact of social determinants that would have potentially left some of these students behind.

Participating as an alumni mentor in the UNSW Year 10 Gateway Program earlier this year was an enriching experience. As a mentor, I had the privilege of witnessing the transformative impact the program had on students. It fostered a dynamic environment where young minds were motivated to consider and undertake studies in areas that genuinely interested them or they never knew of. The program is a testament to UNSW's commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders and innovators from all socio-economic backgrounds. It provided invaluable guidance to students and offered a fulfilling experience for mentors like myself. I left the program feeling inspired by the student's curiosity and drive and I am grateful to have been part of a snippet of their first-time university experience.
