The Trevor Gerber SYD100 Scholarship

An excursion to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport to visit the baggage handling department.

The Trevor Gerber SYD100 Scholarship is a prestigious program dedicated to supporting educationally disadvantaged students at the UNSW School of Aviation. Established in 2020 to commemorate the airport’s centenary and to honor former Chair Trevor Gerber, this scholarship reflects Sydney Airport's commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion within the aviation industry.

Each year, one full scholarship is awarded, providing $25,000 per annum towards residential fees and full tuition coverage for four years. The SYD100 Scholarship is designed to empower students from under-represented groups, including those from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, women, and Indigenous students, ensuring they have the opportunity to pursue their academic and career aspirations in aviation.

"I would like to thank Sydney Airport for introducing the Trevor Gerber SYD100 Scholarship and awarding it to young people like me. From being the first recipient of the scholarship to now working full time at Sydney Airport, the scholarship has allowed me to enjoy the whole university experience and gain immense knowledge about the workings of an airport"

Honour Roll

Harmony Boonaerts

Bachelor of Aviation (Management)

I love all things aviation; from the different types of aircraft to the atmosphere at an airport, and the feeling you get when you take off. It’s always been a passion of mine since I was a kid, and it’s a dream come true to be named the newest recipient of the SYD100 Scholarship.

The scholarship makes it so much more accessible for me to attend university. Being from a rural area, living in the city away from family and friends and completing a degree was always going to be financially challenging. The scholarship takes that stress away and means I can focus on my studies without the worry.

I can’t wait to get started and I’m grateful to Sydney Airport and UNSW for being so supportive. I’m looking forward to entering the world of aviation, and in the future being part of a great bunch of women working in the industry.

Bachelor of Aviation (Management)

The Trevor Gerber SYD100 Scholarship means so much to me. Being able to study at university and be an open proud Indigenous man is incredibly important when so many of my ancestors, even my grandma, were never able to share their Indigenous identity out of fear.

It shows that no matter what background or heritage you come from, anything is possible, especially for First Nations individuals. It also highlights how important education is to success.

The excitement of the trip to the airport and the idea of waiting, going up in the sky and to be in another country in a few hours made me fall in love with aviation.

Jessie Huynh

Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Aviation (Management)

The Trevor Gerber SYD100 Scholarship has helped me immensely, as both a source of motivation in my academic studies and in encouraging me to take the initiative to assume more leadership roles.

The first time I came across the SYD100 scholarship was when UNSW and Australian Aviation published an article introducing the scholarship.

My short-term career goal is to gain relevant experience and skills through subcommittee leadership roles which are transferrable when applying for internships. Over the long run, I hope to work at Sydney Airport or for an airline to oversee ground operations.

I want to say thank you to the Sydney Airport team for making this year an incredible experience and giving me the opportunity to enjoy and balance the social aspect of Uni life with my studies. I am and will always truly be grateful for the support and will strive to achieve the best results expected of me.

Bachelor of Aviation (Management)

This scholarship has helped me immensely in the pursuit of my dream career aspirations. This scholarship has allowed me to immerse myself in the aviation world and industry more so than I would’ve if it hadn’t been for the scholarship. It gave me the opportunity to pursue my pilot training, for which I am forever grateful.

I found out about the SYD100 Scholarship by browsing through the UNSW Scholarship Portal. I was browsing through the scholarships that applied to me and came across the SYD100 Scholarship. I thought that this one was perfect for my situation and applied it. I never thought that I would get it.

The dream career that I’m currently pursuing is commercial piloting. I am currently doing my graduate diploma in flying at UNSW, training to obtain my commercial pilot license and ratings.

I’d like to thank Sydney Airport for providing me with this amazing opportunity and it was a real privilege to be chosen as the 2021 recipient of the Trevor Gerber SYD100 Scholarship. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to be doing what I’m doing now.

The highlights of my degree so far have been receiving the SYD100 scholarship and working with the UNSW Access and Equity team as an ambassador.

My future career aspirations are that I would love to work as Head of the Strategy or Product for an airport.

I would like to thank Sydney airport for introducing the Trevor Gerber SYD100 scholarship and awarding it to young people like me. This scholarship has supported me through the last tough two years and continues to make paths and opportunities in the industry.
