UNSW Flying Simulator Training at FOU

Pilots complete training for CPL and instrument rating using single-pilot procedures. When operating multi-pilot transport category aeroplanes, pilots work together using multi-crew procedures.

UNSWs Multi-crew Cooperation Course gives you the knowledge and skill required to conduct normal and non-normal operations as pilot flying and pilot monitoring, using typical multi-crew procedures as described in our Multi-crew Operations Manual.

This course may suit pilots who:

  1. Are preparing for airline entry recruitment processes
  2. Are intending to undertake a multi-crew aeroplane type rating
  3. Are intending to undertake an ATPL flight test
  4. Want to upskill to more challenging and complex type of flying operations
Course outcomes

On successful completion of the course, you will receive a Course Completion Certificate certifying you have completed training and have been assessed as competent measured against the elements and performance criteria in the CASR1998 Part 61 MOS – MCO unit of competency.

The course is delivered under CASR 1998 Part142, and the certification meets the requirements in CASR 1998 sub regulation 61.700 (3)(e) for the issue of an ATPL, as well as the removal of single-pilot only restrictions for CPL holders.

Course details

Course length is nominally 3-weeks but may vary based on the number of students. The course includes:

  • 6 days (36 hours) of classroom based learning
  • 8 FSTD lessons including pre and post flight briefings

Course start dates in 2024 are:

  • 5 August 2024
  • 23 September 2024
Classroom based learning

The classroom based learning is an introduction to jet transport category aeroplane systems, a review and extension of ATPL human factors and CRM as they apply to the multi-crew environment, and study of the multi-crew operations manual that contains the procedures to be used in the FSTD.

  • 2 days of jet transport systems instruction, including FSTD practice
  • 4 days of human factors, CRM, and multi-crew operating procedures instruction
  • Class times are nominally 0830 to 1530
FSTD lessons

The FSTD is a PacSim Boeing 737 PS4.5 fully enclosed FSTD and includes a full replica of the actual aircraft flightdeck. The FSTD meets the requirements specified by CASA for use in a multi-crew cooperation course and the FSTD is used worldwide for multi-crew training.

  • 7 four-hour lessons, conducted in partnership with another trainee – two-hours pilot flying and two-hours as pilot monitoring each lesson
  • 1 four-hour summative assessment
  • Each lesson preceded by a detailed pre-flight briefing, and afterwards a comprehensive review of performance allowing for consideration and reflection before the next lesson
Course prerequisites

At the commencement of the course, students must hold:

  • A Commercial Pilot Licence (or Air Transport Pilot Licence) with Aeroplane Category Rating
  • An instrument rating with MEA, IAP2D, and IAP3D instrument endorsements
  • A pass in the CASA examination (AHUF) associated with the ATPL Human Factors unit of competency (AHFC)
Fees

$6,500 payable in full before course commencement.
