What are modifiable risk factors?

There are several lifestyle factors that can increase a person’s likelihood of developing dementia. Some lifestyle risk factors can be avoided or reduced – these are known as ‘modifiable risk factors’.
Modifiable risk factors that are known to be strongly linked to increased risk of developing dementia include:
- Depression
- Diabetes
- Hypertension
- Low social contact
- Physical inactivity
- Poor diet and obesity
- Smoking
It is never too early and never too late to modify these risk factors by adopting healthy lifestyle changes.
