The School of Biomedical Sciences is an internationally recognised centre of excellence for biomedical and clinical research and teaching. Our researchers are tackling complex medical problems representing global challenges to human health. Research within our key themes has already led to discoveries with far-reaching social and economic impacts.

Cancer
Our research aims to improve survival and quality of life for all people affected by cancer with clinically informed research. We hope to turn scientific discoveries into cures.
Biophysics

Biophysics research applies the principles and analytical tools founded in the physical sciences to understand how biological systems function, starting from the scale of biomolecules (e.g. proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids) up to cells, tissues, whole organisms, and ecosystems.

Microbiome, Infection, Immunity & Inflammation
We aim to understand, prevent and treat complex infections and conditions. Our focus is on the cellular and molecular level involving viral and bacterial organisms and the immune system.
Neuroscience
Neuroscience is the study of the nervous system, which is one of the last great frontiers of knowledge. Neuroscience research spans from molecules, cells and pathways up to complex human behaviour.
Drug Discovery, Development & Delivery
Drug Discovery, Development and Delivery draws upon an understanding of physiology and biochemistry in developing the mechanisms of drug actions. This includes the efficacy of drugs, the ability of the body to metabolise them, and the toxicology and side effects of drugs.
Cardiovascular & Metabolic Diseases
The research of the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Diseases theme addresses critical questions concerning the impact of ageing, family history and lifestyle factors on chronic disease risk and the development of innovative preventive therapies.
Biomedical Education Research & Development

Biomedical Education in the School of Biomedical Sciences brings together a community of experts with a passion for higher education, innovation, scholarship in learning and teaching, and research into pedagogy within and beyond their discipline.
