Our final speaker in the 2024 International Speaker Series is Professor Michael K. Rakotz, MD, Interim Group Vice President, Improving Health Outcomes, American Medical Association. Prof Rakotz will present a special lecture on "Home BP monitoring in the US – What’s Working, Challenges and Opportunities" and is visiting UNSW as a guest of Professor Alta Schutte, SHARP Professor and Principal Theme Lead of Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic Medicine.

Modern tools and workflows are essential to effectively communicate research outputs from an ever-increasing flow of health data. In this two-day interactive workshop, attendees will learn to visualise data while following best-practice reproducible workflows using the popular RStudio and GitHub software ecosystems. 

The next speaker in our series is Professor Ewout Hoorn, Professor of Nephrology at the Division of Nephrology and Transplantation, Erasmus Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands. His talk topic is "Potassium in chronic kidney disease and potassium-enriched salts", being presented as a hybrid event at The George Institute.

Our visiting international speaker is  Professor Mary M. McDermott, MD, Jeremiah Stamler Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University and Deputy Editor at JAMA. This is a great opportunity to learn about a range of therapies for peripheral artery disease and to meet our international expert in person.

Speaking at the Sydney Cardiovascular Symposium at Garvan Auditorium, Prof Tina Vilsbøll will deliver the plenary lecture on 'Treating Obesity & Cardiovascular Outcomes’. Registration to attend the symposium is free. 

The 3rd Annual UNSW Cardiac, Vascular, and Metabolic Medicine (CVMM) Theme Symposium was held on Friday 27 September at The George Institute for Global Health, Barangaroo.

Dr Steven Niederer from Imperial College London,  is speaking as part of the St Vincent’s Sydney Health Innovation Precinct – Research Week 2024.

Facilitated by the UNSW Research Strategy Office and UNSW Library team, the workshop was designed to enhance skills and knowledge in articulating research impact statements in funding applications and publications, as well as outlining several tools available to help track research impact.

The Cardiac, Vascular & Metabolic Medicine Theme presents the second event in its series of faculty-wide lectures by renowned international speakers. Our visiting speaker is Prof. James Ware of the Imperial College London, speaking on the topic of polygenic determinants of monogenic cardiovascular disease.

On Thursday 7 March 2024, the CVMM Theme hosted our very first international speaker, Professor Jeff Williamson for the CVMM International Speaker Fellowship. The International Speaker Fellowship is a new initiative, where successful academics invite and host an international expert working in cardiac, vascular and metabolic medicine to visit Australia to strengthen existing or establish new collaborations with researchers affiliated to UNSW.

In October, CVMM held a two-day masterclass for early to mid-career researchers focused on systematic reviews of randomised controlled trials and how they can be best used to guide evidence-informed medicine.

Each year, the CVMM Symposium brings together leading experts and researchers in the field of cardiac, vascular, and metabolic medicine for a day of engaging talks, panel discussions, poster presentations, and cross-institute networking. For 2023, we were fortunate enough to host our symposium at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research, where we welcomed our three keynote speakers: David Lloyd, Chief Executive Officer of the Heart Foundation; Catherine Kellick, Principal Policy Officer from Office for Health and Medical Research; and Jason Kovacic, President of The Australian Cardiovascular Alliance and the Executive Director of the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute.

One of the greatest challenges encountered by early to mid-career researchers while applying for a grant is how to develop an effective budget for their research grant proposal. In June 2023, the Cardiac, Vascular and Metabolic Medicine Early to Mid-Career Researchers (EMCR) Committee facilitated a workshop on planning and preparing for a budget for a research grant proposal. The workshop, presented by the UNSW Faculty of Medicine & Health Research Support Team, covered a range of topics including understanding the various categories of research funding, how to best address the grant proposal guidelines, and real budget examples.
