Simulation-based education (SBE) is an instructional method that leverages simulated experiences to enhance learning and skill development. Applying learning science theories to simulation-based education can enhance the design and delivery of educational experiences. By considering principles such as cognitive load management, active learning, and contextualisation, educators can create effective simulations that facilitate meaningful learning and skill development.

Each module follows a sequence:

Contemporary learning science theory e.g. Cognitive Load, Deliberate Practice Theory, Social Learning, Situated Learning

Critical evaluation of its application across a variety of case studies

The modules culminate in a headline learning strategy assessment that justifies the use of the immersive environment to achieve the educational outcome.

Dr Gary Eves

Lecturer Master of Visualisation, Simulation and Immersive Design, UNSW Principal Technology Officer, CAE Inc.

Gary has spent 30 years working in simulation technologies and has developed and used simulation in flight (both civil and military) energy (oil and gas manufacturing), entertainment, defence, and more recently health care His doctorate is in the validation of serious game-based simulations for developing technical and non-technical skills. Professionally he has worked extensively developing novel customer solutions combining VR, AR and synthetic environments.

Qualify for Recognition of Prior Learning of 3UOC by completing the first two short courses. We offer several postgraduate study options, including the Master of Simulation & Immersive Technologies and Graduate Certificate in Simulation & Immersive Technologies, which will contribute towards your accredited professional learning hours.

To be eligible for postgraduate study, you will need:

a recognised Bachelors degree withan equivalent of a UNSW 65 weighted average mark(WAM).
Entry is not dependent upon a degree related tothe creative disciplines given that the programs aim to enable practitioners from a wide range of industry sectors to integrate visualisation, simulation and immersive environments into their work contexts.
Entry into the Graduate Certificate without a Bachelors degree is possible with industry experience of over five years.
