The UNSW School of Education offers a way for education professionals to expand their knowledge and advance their career in less time and with increased flexibility.

Microcredentials enable you to extend one of our accredited professional learning courses into 6 Units of Credit (UOC), which can be used towards a postgraduate degree in Education. You’ll apply what you‘ve learned from your professional learning course, engage with online resources and complete two assessments to demonstrate your learning. Upon successful entry to one of our postgraduate programs, you can use this credit to accelerate your studies and complete a Master of Education or Graduate Certificate in less time.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible for a Microcredential, you will need to have completed the corresponding foundational professional learning courses:

To be eligible for postgraduate study, you will need:

  • a recognised bachelor’s degree and a postgraduate teaching qualification (such as Graduate Diploma of Education or Master of Teaching); OR
  • a four-year pre-service teacher education qualification, including professional experience, equivalent to the qualifications required for Graduate teacher status in NSW.

How do I complete a Microcredential?

The online materials, resources and assessment tasks can be accessed at any time, giving you increased flexibility around when and where you complete your studies.

  1. Register for a Microcredential Unit: 
    Microcredential Unit in Gifted Education: Key Concepts and Issues                    
    Microcredential Unit in Special and Inclusive Education: Students on the Autism Spectrum   
  2. Following registration, you will be enrolled on our online course platform and gain access to supplementary online materials and resources necessary for completing the assessments in the unit.
  3. Finish and upload the two assessments using the online course platform. Your submissions will be reviewed by a member of the School of Education Academic team.
  4. Upon successful completion of the unit, you will be invited to apply for postgraduate study. The 6 UOC will be applied upon commencement of study.

Course details

  • In this course you will continue to be introduced to the key concepts and issues surrounding gifted education. Through a mixture of video lectures and self-directed readings, you will gain information and skills relating to sub-groups of gifted students, creativity, and policy and advocacy in gifted education.

    The successful completion of this unit will equip you to gain familiarity with who gifted students are, how to identify gifted students, how best to serve gifted students, and the numerous professional documents relating to gifted education.

    This unit is delivered entirely online and is designed to facilitate self-paced and self-directed learning.  You will have 18 months to complete the unit. This ensures that the content remains fresh and applicable, and that you are able to maximise your learning outcomes.
    Course outline

  • This unit expands on the information, theories, research, and strategies relating to autism presented in the School of Education’s Supporting Students on the Autism Spectrum short course. 

    Broadened public awareness of the autism spectrum and continuing research means that more students than ever before are being identified on the autism spectrum. 

    You will engage with current knowledge about characteristics and effective evidence-based practices used to assist students on the autism spectrum to accomplish their educational goals. You will also engage with theories, societal attitudes, legislation, and policy to develop your professional judgments and teaching practices.

    This unit is delivered entirely online and is designed to facilitate self-paced and self-directed learning. You will have 18 months to complete the unit. This ensures that the content remains fresh and applicable, and that you are able to maximise your learning outcomes.
