Driving is one of the main modes of transport for adults worldwide and rates of participation in driving are increasing in older age groups. For example, in Australia the proportion of people aged 80 years and older with a licence increased from 59% in 2007 to 69% in 2015. While driving offers many advantages for independent mobility, older drivers have an increased risk of crash involvement, drive older vehicles and are more vulnerable to serious injury compared to younger drivers.
Professor Lisa Keay presents findings and further outcomes from 2019 UNSW Ageing Futures Institute seed funding for a project titled ‘Increasing older drivers’ competency and confidence in use of advanced vehicle technologies (AVT)’.
About the presenter
Professor Lisa Keay is the Head of School at the School of Optometry and Vision Science, UNSW Sydney and an Honorary Professorial Fellow at The George Institute for Global Health, UNSW Sydney. She is a public health researcher, with expertise in epidemiology, health promotion, health systems research and injury prevention. She trained as an Optometrist, has a PhD and MPH from UNSW Sydney, completed a research fellowship at the Dana Center for Preventive Ophthalmology, Johns Hopkins University and worked for 10 years in the Injury Division at The George Institute for Global Health. Her research activities focus on ageing and vision impairment including a program of research in safe mobility for older drivers.
