The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Senator the Hon Penny Wong, announced Sunaina and the cohort of inaugural Maitri Fellows on 20 May at CAIR's formal launch event in Parramatta.

Sunaina joins UNSW from India’s eminent Observer Research Foundation where she leads research on gender and development, with a focus on women and economic equality.

She recently served as Executive Director of Think20 India in support of India’s G20 Presidency, which saw her working closely with the foremost academics and researchers from G20 countries, including leaders from government, international development, private sector, and civil society.

Based at the UNSW Institute for Global Development, Sunaina will have a busy six-month fellowship program that blends academic pursuits, collegiate networking, and ambassadorial duties. Her work will build and strengthen collaboration on economic relations between Australia and India, with a lens on shared opportunities for addressing economic inequality in the greater Southasia region.
