Overview
The Graduate Certificate in Construction Project Management at UNSW the first tier of two postgraduate programs that will prepare you to advance your professional experience and drive solutions to current and future challenges in the construction industry. The program is completed on a part-time basis over one-year. It’s both a practical way for you to upskill over a year while working, and a stepping-stone to the Master of Construction Project Management.
You’ll gain practical experience alongside a community of students and experts in architecture, design, and planning - mirroring real industry relationships with stakeholders. As you dive into modern management methodologies and gain experience applying them to achieve successful project outcomes in time, cost, quality, safety, and sustainability, you’ll gain the skills to manage projects that benefit people and the planet.

Entry requirements
To qualify for entry into the Graduate Certificate in Construction Project Management you’ll need to need to have one of the following:
- A bachelor degree in a related field*
- A bachelor degree in any field + three years construction industry experience at a managerial level
- An accredited diploma in a related field* + three years construction experience at a managerial level
- An accredited diploma in an unrelated field + five years construction experience at a managerial level
- A recognised and relevant professional qualification + 5 years of work experience in the construction industry at a management level. Professional qualifications include membership of the:
- Australian Institute of Building (AIB),
- Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS),
- Australian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (AIQS),
- Master Builders Association (MBA) or
- Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
*Related fields are:
- Built environment disciplines
- Engineering
- Business
- Law
Please note: The Graduate Certificate is not available to international students as it can only be undertaken on a part-time basis.
English language requirements
You may be asked to provide evidence of your English proficiency to study at UNSW depending on your educational background and citizenship. English language skills are vitally important for coping with lectures, tutorials, assignments and examinations - this is why UNSW requires a minimum English language competency for enrolment.
If you’re completing an Australian Year 12 qualification (e.g. NSW HSC or equivalent), you do not need to provide anything extra to prove your proficiency. Your qualification will be used as evidence of your English proficiency.
If you do need to provide evidence of your English proficiency, this will be indicated in your application. You can prove this by providing evidence that you meet one or more of the following criteria:
- English language tests and university English courses
- Prior study in the medium of English
- Other qualifications
If you need to improve your English skills before you start your degree, UNSW College’s Academic English Programs are for you. The programs are suitable for various English levels and help you prepare for university studies and life in Australia.
Program structure
The Graduate Certificate in Construction Project Management consists of four courses taught part-time over one year. Once you complete these courses, you’ll be eligible to progress into the Master of Construction Project Management.
Full program structure
Each university year at UNSW has three terms and an optional summer study period. This program consists of four courses and can only be undertaken on a part-time basis.
Depending on your study load, you’ll study one or two courses in each term, and complete the Certificate in one year.
You will choose to study four of the following disciplinary core courses:
- Management of Construction Organisations
- Construction Informatics
- Construction Planning and Control
- Construction Contract Administration
- Construction Management Theory and Practice
- Construction Risk Management and Business Analytics
- Construction Cost and Value Management
Master’s progression
The Graduate Certificate of Construction Project Management offers a pathway to the Master of Construction Project Management, which will which will deepen your knowledge, industry experience and research skills, giving you professional accreditation and further opportunity to advance your career.

Future careers
Construction management is a large, varied industry, that has grown strongly over the last five years and has strong future growth projected. Most Construction Managers work full time, and earn an average weekly income of $3450 AUD, which is well over the Australian average*.
You’ll graduate with in-demand knowledge and skills that will open up new career opportunities in construction or a related industry and lay the foundations for progression into project management in the construction industry. If you progress into the Master of Construction Project Management, you’ll be eligible for professional accreditation.
