UNSW School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering is a leading provider of industry-relevant Mining and Petroleum Engineering education and research. Our multidisciplinary academics produce internationally acclaimed research, working closely with our partners in the minerals and energy sectors to provide innovative solutions for the most complex problems facing the industry.
With gas, petroleum, mining and minerals industries contributing $190 billion a year to Australia’s economy, our work is now more important than ever.
Our school leads not only in Australia but also the world. In the latest global rankings, we're 3rd in the world (QS World University Rankings, 2022), and 8th in the world (Academic Ranking of World Universities, 2022). We understand that the industry is in a period of transition, particularly in terms of energy. While there are adjustments on the horizon for more traditional technologies, our school is on the front foot in creating opportunities for those interested in working towards a sustainable future through several new and emerging fields. With the best facilities in resources engineering in the country, we are doing the research and producing the graduates who are addressing climate change. Our areas of focus include CO₂ sequestration; improving efficiencies through digital rock analysis; generating clean energy through geothermal engineering; and research into space mining.

Welcome to the School of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering. The School has been a provider of innovative world class engineering education and research in both petroleum and mining for more than 70 years. Our school continues to thrive with highly sought-after undergraduate and postgraduate programs, along with an increase in our internationally acclaimed research output.
Our vision for the School is one of global leadership in teaching and research excellence in the minerals and energy sector of the economy. We will drive the national agenda across the breadth of Minerals and Energy Resources Engineering, and in doing so will enhance the quality of life for humanity in a sustainable way.
